邻居有一只鸡在夜里打鸣，厌恶它不吉祥，便把它烹吃了。过了几天，另一只鸡天亮了却不打鸣，便又把它烹吃了。过后他对我说：“我家的鸡有的夜里打鸣，有的早晨却不打鸣，对这种不吉祥的事怎么办？”我告诉他说：“鸡打鸣能对人不吉祥吗？只不过它们自作不吉祥罢了。有的夜里打鸣，鸣得不是时候；早晨不打鸣，不打鸣也不是时候，那是它们自己不吉祥而导致被烹吃的，同人又有什么关系呢？如果它们按时打鸣，那么人将依靠它们报晓，谁还会烹吃它们呢？”我又想到：人的发言与沉默和这件事有什么不同呢？不应发言而发言，同应当发言而不发言，都足以招来灾祸啊。
言默戒的原文是一篇文言文，它告诉我们一个道理：该说不说和不该说却说，都会招致灾祸，说话做事要适宜。
A neighbor had a chicken crowing at night. He hated its bad luck and cooked it. After a few days, another chicken did not crow at daybreak, so he cooked it again. Later he asked me:“some of my chickens crow at night, but some don't crow in the morning. What should I do about this kind of unlucky thing?”I told him, “can the crowing of chickens be bad for people? It's just that they act bad for themselves. Some crowing at night is not the right time; no crowing in the morning, it's also not the right time. It's their own bad luck that causes them to be cooked. What does it have to do with people? If they crow on time,people will rely on them to announce the dawn. Who will cook them?”I thought again:what is the difference between people's saying and keeping silence? Saying when you shouldn't, or keeping silence when you should say, are both enough to cause disaster.
The original text of Silent precept is a classical Chinese text, which tells us a truth: if you say something or not at the wrong time,it will lead to disaster. Speak and do things appropriately.
