While studying at the provincial Youth League school, I learned about the meeting of the central committee of the CPC at the Mount Lu （a special meeting of the Political bureau of the Central Committee of CPC held in 1959）.I knew that at the beginning its purpose was anti-left deviation and to correct the pompous style.However, Peng Dehuai wrote “a letter of ten thousand words” to Chairman Mao Zetong, but was criticized for telling the truth.The meeting suddenly changed from “Anti-rash advance” to “Anti-rightist”.Peng Dehuai suddenly became the leader of the Anti-party group.
From then on, if you have any dissatisfaction with the principals of the “General line”, the “Great leap forward”, the “People’s commune”, the “Three Red Banners”, the “High index”, the “Putting up lies”, or if you had any problems with the “Blind Command”, you would be branded a “right opportunist”.Although everybody was very dissatisfied, no one dared say a word.Knowing this, I became more determined to go home.Later, the Central Committee put forward the eight-character policy of “Adjusting, Consolidating, Enriching and Improving” the national economy.All over the country, cadres and workers from state branches, enterprises, and institutions were being mobilized to return to their villages of origin, supporting the front line of agricultural production.I heard about some cadres being sent back to the countryside and thought I could finally go home this time.
At the end of my three-months of study, a friend in Anwen called to tell me that Anwen was also mobilizing cadres to go back to their hometowns, but I heard that there was an internal plan: first of all, to mobilize the old, the weak, the sick, and the disabled to return home, then those who complained a lot and had bad work performance.The core members who performed well and had strong abilities would stay.If they wanted to leave, the party would talk them into staying.
However, a few days later, my friend called me again and said that the entire Anwen district, including the district party committee, the administrative districts and communes, with the exception of the district party secretary and an organizing committee member, all wrote reports calling for return.Why were they leaving? Because everyone was dissatisfied.The cadres all had a sense of resentment and were unwilling to continue their work.

A few days later, both the director of the People’s Armed Forces of Anwen District and the party secretary of Yunshan commune called me, and they told me that they had been sent home.These two were good friends of mine, and I couldn’t sit still any longer when I heard that they had gone home.Even though I hadn’t finished my studies, I packed my bags and hurried back to Anwen that day.
But when I got back to Anwen and found Secretary Li, he told me that the streamlining and decentralization process had been completed and closed down.Those who should go had already gone, those who stayed should not go, so I could rest assured and keep do my work well.But I had made up my mind.I had to go home.I said, “This time I must go back to Hengdian, whether you agree to or not.”
The next day, I went to the organization department of the Dongyang County Party Committee.An old friend of mine was a member in the organization department.I went to him and asked him what he could do to help me get home.He said that the organization department of the County Party Committee was very impressed with my work.The deputy director, whose surname is Pan, was in charge of this work.I found Pan, handed him an application to go back home to farm, and said to him, “Director Pan, do me a favor and let me go home.” Pan said, “Don’t go back.The ministry is considering to appoint you as the secretary of Yunshan Commune.” Yunshan Commune Party Secretary Jin Yihai was my good friend, who had just gone home.How could I fill his vacancy? I said to the minister, “I’m not going to Yunshan.I must go back to Hengdian.You must help.” Then, I went back to Hengdian home before the offical approval.Later, the leadership of Anwen district and the Organization Department of the County Party Committee went through the formalities for me, and gave me 10 months’ salary, about 400—500 yuan as a settlement fee.
In this way, I went home and broke the “iron rice bowl”.Some said I had ruined my career, gone from being a young and promising salaried cadre of the state to a penniless farmer.I would take it.
