5.Participating in the Work of Eliminating Counter-Revolutionaries

The campaign of Eliminating Counter-Revolutionaries referred to a nationwide campaign aimed at eliminating the hidden forces of eliminate counter-revolutionaries from 1955 to the end of 1957.Unlike the counter-insurgency of 1951, which was directed against the Kuomintang, political and military personnel, special agents, bandits, and bullies.“Eliminate counter-revolutionaries” was to eliminate secret agents, cadres of the reactionary party clique, leaders of reactionary societies, traitors and other eliminate counter-revolutionaries hidden in the ranks of the revolution. In accordance with the unified request of the central committee, “eliminate counter-revolutionaries committees”or “leading groups for the elimination of counter-revolutionaries” (called “five-member groups”) had been set up in all localities to lead the movement to eliminate eliminate counter-revolutionaries in their units.Dongyang County has also set up a five-member group, who had the power to make a final settlement for counter revolutionaries.

In Dongyang, the campaign began in May 1956, a year later than the rest of the country.I was transferred to the county eliminate counter-revolutionaries office, mainly to participate in the trial work.I was assigned to work as an investigator at the finance and trade office. The finance and trade office covered the financial and commercial circulation areas, such as finance and taxation, banks, state-owned stores, supply and marketing cooperatives, as well as the food bureau, non-staple food companies, agricultural companies, sugar, tobacco and wine companies and other units. An investigator would be put in charge of the investigation of a specific case, as assigned by the leader, and then report to the leader again.

At that time, I was not a member of the Communist Party, and did not meet the requirements for this job.Although I’d already submitted an application to join the Communist Party, I hadn’t been accepted. Why? Because my social relationships were too “complicated.” Before the liberation, one of our neighbors was the president of the Peoples High Court of Zhejiang Province. My mother was on good terms with his first wife.In order to earn a living, several members of our family had worked for the court for a short time as a bailiff, that is, to send subpoenas and the like. That was working for the old government.Besides, my uncle was a rich peasant, and my younger brother-in-law was an officer of the Kuomintang. With these complicated relationships, I would not be able to join the party, and I was put to the test.

I knew the leaders liked me because I was enthusiastic and worked hard.To transfer was to further test me.

Therefore, after I went to the eliminate counter-revolutionaries office, I was very serious and responsible.I was fair and disinterested, seeking truth from facts, and absolutely tried to prevent from wrong accusation as requested by the leadership.I’d been focused on the investigation in Dongyang, where walking in the mountains was the routine. Some people, on the other hand, tried to use the opportunity to travel and go to big cities.I remembered a man who ran halfway across China and bought two roast chickens for his wife from Dezhou, Shandong Province. He was criticized for failing to do his research. The cases I worked on had all been completed as assigned by the leaders.I was efficient both in time and budget.More importantly, I investigated thoroughly with reliable evidence and collated materials.I knew the materials I submitted were directly related to a person’s political life and his future.I handled every case very carefully. As a result, I became frequently praised as a model by the leadership.

Because I was willing to take on hard work and didn’t care about my own self-interest, also because of my strong working ability, and excellent performance while working in the office of “eliminating counter-revolutionaries”, I was approved to join the Communist Party of China. My years of wishes came true.I became a glorious Chinese Communist Party member.I was very happy and proud.

By the end of “eliminating counter-revolutionaries”, Chairman Mao Zedong proposed that a hundred flowers should bloom and a hundred schools of thought should contend, and that all the people of the united front should be mobilized to create posters and submit their opinions to the Communist Party of China. However, the counter-right movement began soon.Since we were directly involved in eliminating counter-revolutionaries, people in my office didn’t go directly to counter-rightists, but we also went to read posters, mainly to keep an eye on the personnel who had held the post of company commander or above in Kuomintang Army.If they had reactionary remarks against the party or socialism, we could settle the case on the spot with a counter-revolution and arrest and imprison them.

I worked in the eliminate counter-revolutionaries office for three years. In the end, most of the people went back to their original units, leaving only a few of us to do the finishing work, deal with some remaining problems, and wait for new assignments. aw6kY2XZXuPI9CfEJZvC7zu9SnbYcjMyxIH+fhm2kvNPL+KXFqczOQ2UReLaea5p
