While learning carpentry under my uncle in Zhuji, I saw the PLA from a distance.They wore blue and grey uniforms and carried guns.I didn’t know which unit they were from.Some said they came down from Siming Mountain; some said they were from the guerrilla units from eastern Zhejiang; some said they were from Jinxiao detachment.I didn’t know.In fact, there were communist-led guerrilla fighters in Dongyang and Pan’an at that time.Later, I heard that they were the Dongpan detachment.
Not long after I came back from Zhuji, my father took me to a temple in Pingyan Cave to worship.“Don’t move!” Two guns were pointed at us.“What are you doing here?” My father said, “We come to pray for God’s blessing.This is my son.” They asked, “Why are there gunshots in Hengdian?” My father said, “I don’t know.We didn’t hear it.” They stopped asking.In fact, that was when we heard that the People’s Liberation Army was coming, and the communist guerrillas were fighting the bandits in Hengdian.The fighting in Hengdian was very intense.These two people were bandits who hid in the mountain.But they were gone after we came out of the temple.
It was the regular PLA troops who liberated Dongyang.At that time, the common people called them “The Big Army”, or “Liberation Army”.Many years later, when I read history, I learned that this unit was the 35th Division of the 12th Army of the 3rd Regiment of the 2nd Field Army of the People’s Liberation, and the 35th Division was under the command of Li Desheng.
After crossing the Yangtze River from Anhui Province, the army entered Zhejiang, liberated Chun’an, Jiande, Lanxi and Jinhua, Yiwu, Dongyang and Yongkang on the same day of May 8th.After the liberation of Dongyang, they stationed in Dongyang, Hengdian and Xialishu.Later, I heard that the People’s Liberation Army also set up a headquarters in Hengdian.Of course, it was unknown to us common people at that time.In November 1995, when General Li Desheng was invited to the fifth anniversary of establishment of Hengdian Group, he told me about the liberation of Dongyang and stationing in Hengdian.
After a short time, the Liberation Army left.They drove away suddenly and secretly to the southwest of China.By this time, Dongyang County had been taken over by the Shangdong Brigade and the CCP office personnel from Dongpan, and the district governments were being established.However, the number of cadres was relatively small, and there was only a few guns in each district.The county government had been set up.
As soon as the stationing army left, there were rumors that the communists had abandoned Dongyang and went back to Shandong, and that the Kuomintang was coming back.Wang Kaicheng, a former deputy commander of the security forces in Zhejiang Province, and a member of Kuomintang, rallied the remnants of the Kuomintang reactionary forces and bandits in a last-ditch resistance in the mountains.As soon as the Liberation Army left, their activities became rampant, and bandits from Qianxiang, Fangjun and Mazhai often attacked Hengdian.The society was very restless, and the common people were still frightened.
Later, I heard that a regiment of the PLA came and stationed in Dongyang to suppress the bandits.
With the close cooperation of the local armed forces in the district, from about the end of 1949 to the spring of 1950, various groups of bandits were eliminated, and the whole society gradually stabilized.
