A Good Teacher

“A good teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”—Henry Adams.

In the conversation about closing the United States’ widening gap in student achievement, much attention has been focused on policy, funding, test scores, and parent involvement. Research shows that each of these factors indeed plays a part in determining how much a student learns; however, improving student success starts directly in the classroom—with great, quality teachers.

Good teachers make a tremendous difference in the lives of students, from improving academic success to providing emotional and social support—and the research backs it up.

All of us at some point in our lives have been students, and we’ve all had many teachers. Some we couldn’t stand, others really stood out. But what are the qualities that make someone a good teacher?

Good teachers always possess many fine qualities that allow them to do their job effectively. There is no denying that every teacher comes with his or her own unique blend of such valuable qualities. It is this uniqueness that ultimately makes a teacher special. Each teacher is different, but virtually every good teacher is equipped with some essential qualities.

What Makes a Good Teacher?

As has been stated in the above excerpt, a good teacher exerts considerable influence on students’ outlook on diverse aspects of their life, which, to a large extent, may be permanent. There are numerous valuable qualities that make up a good teacher. From my point of view, a good teacher should possess rich professional knowledge, outstanding communication skills, excellent organization skills and incredible patience. (Viewpoint)

Firstly, a good teacher should be both knowledgeable and good at communicating. (Topic sentence) Teaching is about sharing knowledge with students and helping them become better and useful people, so good teachers should firstly have enough knowledge of the subjects that they teach. Meanwhile, if they can’t convey what they know to students in a way that is not only understandable but also engaging, then teaching is not achieved. Thus, good communication skills are very important too.

Besides, being able to organize a class efficiently is a necessary quality for every good teacher.
