有子曰：“其为人也孝弟，而好犯上者，鲜矣；不好犯上，而好作乱者，未之有也。君子务本，本立而道生。孝弟也者，其为人（仁）之本与！”

said, “It is a rare thing for someone who has a sense of filial and fraternal responsibility(
xiaoti
孝弟
) to have a taste for defying authority. And it is unheard of for those who have no taste for defying authority to be keen on initiating rebellion. Exemplary persons (
junzi
君子
) concentrate their efforts on the root,for the root having taken hold, the way (
dao
道
) will grow therefrom. As for filial and fraternal responsibility,it is, I suspect, the root of authoritative conduct (
ren
仁
).”
