子夏问孝。子曰：“色难。有事，弟子服其劳；有酒食，先生馔，曾是以为孝乎？”
Zixia asked about filial conduct ( xiao 孝 ). The Master replied, “It all lies in showing the proper coun tenance. As for the young contributing their energies when there is work to be done, and deferring to their elders when there is wine and food to be had—how can merely doing this be considered being filial?”
