1. Are you a student?
★ Yes. Presently I’m a third-year college student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
★ No. I graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University last year. I’m planning to study abroad and so, here I am.
2. What major do you study?
★ Electrical engineering. It’s a quite popular major in China.
★ I major in traditional Chinese medicine, which has a long history of development in China.
3. Why did you choose this major?
★ My father is an electrical engineer who is extremely passionate about his work. When I was a kid, I often saw him working enthusiastically without resting. I was so curious about this field ever since then and later, when I went to college, I chose this major without hesitation.
★ When I was in primary school, my grandfather suffered from a very strange disease. He went to see a lot of doctors but there was no way out. Later, an old doctor prescribed a kind of traditional Chinese herb and that helped my grandfather a lot. From then on, I started to be very interested in traditional Chinese medicine, and that’s why I chose it as my major.
4. What do you like most about your studies?
★ In fact, I like almost all aspects of my studies. But my favorite is program writing, coz it’s very innovative and challenging for me. I often try to write some programs in my spare time.
★I’m particularly fond of learning about traditional Chinese herbs. I always think they are so mysterious and powerful in curing diseases, and therefore, I am eager to know more about them.
5. Is there anything you don’t like about your studies?
★It’s extremely hard to learn. I think I speak for at least half of engineering students when I say that. Other than that, I quite enjoy my studies at school.
★Generally I like my studies, but I really hate memorizing all these abstract theoretical principles in books. I prefer to learn things through examples and evidence which could help me understand better.
6. How do you like your life in the university?
★ I enjoy it very much. My classmates are all very friendly; the teachers are very knowledgeable and helpful; my major is of my own interest. I don’t think I have anything to complain about.
★ I don’t like it very much. The dormitory is too small and crowded; the food in the school canteen is tasteless; and some mandatory classes are not so inspiring. It is not the life I imagined when I was in high school. I’m really disappointed.
7. Could you tell me your plan after graduation?
★ After graduation I plan to pursue further studies in my university. As you know, my university is one of the top universities in China, and the Engineering School in my university is also on the top list. I want to make full use of the education here to achieve self-development.
★ I’d like to start working. I really like my major and want to have a career in the related field. For my major, a very important thing is to put the theory I’ve learned into practice. Therefore, I think it’s quite necessary to find a job after graduation.
8. Tell me something about your teachers/professors.
★ I really like my teachers. They are knowledgeable, friendly and patient. They are helpful not only in class, but also after class. On campus, you can always see teachers and students talking happily or having a snack together.
★ My teachers help me a lot in my studies. In class, they explain things clearly and encourage us to be creative. After class, whenever we are puzzled by a problem, we could always telephone them or send them emails. They are more than happy to offer us their help.

Among all my teachers, Miss Zhang is my favourite. She teaches oral English in my university. She’s a very beautiful young lady with long straight hair and big eyes.
Oral English was a headache for most of us at that time. However, Miss Zhang could always find ways to arouse our interests. I remember when we were discussing dating and marriage, one day she came to class, looking frustrated. She told us that two young men were pursuing her at the same time. She had no idea who she should choose. On hearing this we were so excited and eager to give her some suggestions. She told us about the two young men in details and asked us to discuss who was the right person to choose and why. During that class, we had heated discussion in English and everyone was quite deeply involved in the topic. Later she told us that was just a made-up scenario and thanked us for our wonderful input. However, everyone of us did enjoy that class very much.
With Miss Zhang’s help, I have become more and more interested in practicing English and could make use of every minute in class. After only one semester, I have made great progress and built up my confidence when speaking English.

My favourite teacher is Mr. Wei, my geology teacher when I was in middle school. He always wore very formal clothes, usually black suit and tie, in class. One interesting thing was that he liked wearing a pair of glasses, though he was not near-sighted at all. He declared that it could make him look wise.
Mr. Wei had a unique way of teaching geography, which made learning very fun. For example, to help us remember the various names of places, cities and resources around the world, he made up some funny rhymes by himself. Those rhymes were so interesting that we could memorize them with no difficulty. By that way, we could easily memorise what we learned from the textbook and enjoy the process of learning as well.
Before, I had thought geography was boring and had never liked to listen to the teachers in class. Thanks to Mr. Wei, I discovered not only my interest, but also my potential in geography. When I was in the second year, I was chosen to attend a competition about the common sense of geography in my hometown and won the first prize.
1. What method of learning works best for you?
★ The method that works best for me is independent learning. First of all, since I’m the only person who best knows my own ability, when I study independently, I could totally control my own speed of learning without worrying about being lagged behind. Therefore, I could study most efficiently. Meanwhile, because I can enjoy the academic freedom of choosing whatever subject I’m interested in, I can be very involved and absorbed in learning. Last but not least, after I achieve something without any outside help, I could have a strong feeling of fulfillment. In my opinion, independent learning is the most important skill one has to learn in university.
★ I’d say seminars. Since there are usually a limited number of people sitting for seminars, I can get more personal attention from the professors than what I normally get in a lecture. That means I could have better interaction with the professors, which would help me learn more from them. Moreover, my chances of interacting with fellow classmates are greater as well. We can exchange ideas, communicate information and share learning experiences. It’s a win-win situation.
2. What do you think is the best way to educate children?
★ I think the best way to educate children is to give them chances to learn through practice. If you teach children something by just giving instructions or principles, it would be very hard for them to comprehend. For example, can you imagine being told to make a tie? It would be much easier to learn by practicing it yourself with someone aside showing you the way.
★ I believe children learn best by imitation and repetition. For instance, when children learn a language, they would first hear the words and sentences, imitate and say them over and over again. When they become familiar enough with these words, they would be able to remember them by heart and make use of them as acquired knowledge.
3. How has the Chinese education system changed in recent years?
★ More advanced technology has been used in schools today, such as tablets, audio-visual and multi-media facilities, and numerous educational apps. With the application of the modern technology, independent learning is encouraged among students at the same time, which has greatly helped in exploring students’ potential of learning after class.
★ One of the biggest changes is the increased admission. Nowadays, more and more students are able to go to college while in the past the competition was always fiercer. The reason lies in the change of state policy to give more young people the chances to acquire higher education and to build highly educated labour force.
4. Why do people want to learn a foreign language?
★ I think that depends on the person, but the most common motivation probably is to be able to communicate with people from a different culture who speak a different language. Being able to speak a foreign language really opens doors to you when you go to a foreign land, because it would be much easier for you to adapt to the new environment if you approach to local people in their own language.
★ People want to learn a foreign language because bilingualism is now perhaps the most useful real-world skill to ever exist as the world becomes increasingly globalized. Learning a language can improve their employment prospects. More companies than ever are doing business in several countries around the world, and they are looking for people who have a grasp on at least one foreign language. Even in small local companies, applicants who can speak a second language also have an advantage over their competitors. In short, learning a foreign language opens up a world of job opportunities.
1. What is the most important quality of a good teacher?
★ Different people have different opinions about this question. To me, being knowledgeable is the most important quality of a good teacher. If it’s not the case, how could the teacher instruct the students and help them acquire relating knowledge and skills?
★ I think the primary quality of a good teacher is being inspiring. Good teachers should be those who know how to encourage and motivate their students to think on their own, act on their own and be willing to take adventures. In that way, the students could better exert their own potentials in both learning and exploring so that they could learn as much as possible with courage and passion.
2. Do you think computer will ever replace human as teachers?
★ I don’t think so. Machine is machine. It could never replace flesh and blood teachers. At best computers could be good learning aids. However, they could not adapt to the particular issues some students might have like a real teacher. Furthermore, can a computer teach students how to cultivate critical thinking or cognitive learning? There are some functions computers would never fulfill comparing with human brain.
★ I think it is possible under certain circumstances. For instance, to those upper-level students who have well acquired the skills of independent learning and researching, computers could complete the function of teaching. However, in most cases, real teachers are totally irreplaceable.
3. What do you think of private schools and public schools?
★ Private schools have sprung up in recent years in China. They are usually better positioned to provide a high-quality teaching faculty, equipment and facilities while public schools, funded by government, sometimes may find it hard to do so. However, since private schools are not funded publicly while the running of them requires a large investment, they usually charge students with higher tuition. That’s why to many people, the doors of private schools are only open to students from privileged families.
★ I think they are complementary to each other. In China, the majority of students attend public schools and as a result, those schools are becoming more and more crowded. However, private schools can offer a smaller student-to-teacher ratio than public schools. Moreover, private schools could be able to implement more programs and hire better teachers due to the fact that they have more money in their school systems garnered by student tuition. So if your child seems to be getting lost in the shuffle of public schools, you can send him or her to private schools.
4. Which one is more important, research or teaching? Why?
★ I think we should give priority to teaching during the undergraduate study because at this stage students need a well-built foundation for their future career, either in academia or industry. Personally, I take it that teaching is more about imparting knowledge to students and inspiring them to think for themselves and raise more puzzling yet more interesting questions they are eager to answer based on what they have learnt. On the other hand, research training focuses on the rigorous rules students should follow in principle and internalize in practice. As long as students turn learning into a self-sustaining process, they are better equipped either as a businessman or as a researcher.
★ Well, that’s a tough question. However, my personal opinion is that both are equally important. While proper teaching ensures that young students are getting the education necessary for them to grow, academically, psychologically and socially, research works, on the other hand, help solve practical problems and contribute to the advancement of human civilization. I also feel that research projects are more measurable and tangible goals for teachers and students to achieve in university. In contrast, the effort put in teaching is kind of undervalued because it’s more about the process rather than the result.
