Every spring, thousands of boys and girls go to new schools to further their studies. Despite the excitement and novelty, they are always perplexed with difficulties of various kinds. In this essay, I would like to explore the phenomenon and offer some suggestions.
Firstly, they will encounter some psychological problems, such as homesickness, disorientation, anxiety, inferiority complex and inadaptability. Secondly, they may have financial problems. Some of them may not have enough money to afford the tuition and accommodation. Moreover, they may have difficulties in adapting themselves to the new teaching methods and teaching facilities. Some of them may find it very hard to keep up with other students. Above all, misunderstanding and disputes may arise due to inadequate knowledge of the local tradition and culture.
In order to overcome the above-mentioned difficulties, I think both the freshmen and the school administrators should devote their share to it. On the side of the new students, they should be fully prepared for their new school life, not only academically, but also financially and psychologically. Firstly, they should foresee the hardships and difficulties ahead and learn to be independent and self-reliant. Secondly, they should have a basic understanding of the new school and the local culture before they begin their new school life. Thirdly, they should maintain regular emotional contacts with family members and former classmates so that they won’t feel so lonely and can to some extent drive off their homesickness and depression. Last of all, they should actively participate in the school activities and try to be a member of the school community as early as possible. On the other hand, the school administrators and teachers should play an important role. To begin with, they should give care, support and guidance to the new students, helping them take good care of their life and study. Secondly, they should organize some activities requiring the participation of both old and new students, thus creating opportunities for the freshmen to get to know more friends. Thirdly, some special consultative offices should be established to solve the psychological problems commonly vexing the new comers.
In short, in order to enjoy a fruitful and colorful school life, the students and school administrators and teachers should pay special attention to this phenomenon.
