1.2 Laboratory safety

1.2.1 Personal Protection

1. Eye Protection

①Splash and impact protective goggles are required at all times in the laboratory.

②Do not rub your eyes until you have thoroughly washed your hands.

2. Clothing,Hair,and Jewelry

①Wear shoes that completely cover your feet to protect your feet from debris or broken glass on the floor and from chemical spills.

②Constrain long hair,neckties,and scarves to prevent contact with chemicals,fire,and equipment.

③Students are advised to remove jewelry to prevent trapping chemicals under the jewelry,contact with electrical sources,and catching on equipment.

3. Gloves

①If gloves are required,check for holes and tears before each use.Remove gloves before leaving your work area to prevent contamination of other surfaces.

②Cleanordisposeofglovesproperly.

4. Food and Beverages

①Food and beverages are not permitted in the laboratory.

②Do not use tobacco products or chew gum in the laboratory.

1.2.2 Emergency Procedures

1. Evacuation

①When the alarm sounds,extinguish any flame that is in the room.

②Leave the building quickly,closing all windows and doors behind you.

2. Personal Injury

①Simple first aid kits are located in the storage cabinets of each laboratory.

②If necessary,transport the injured person to the emergency room.

③Chemical burns:Use shower or eyewash for at least 20 minutes.Remove clothing if necessary.

④Bleeding:Clean the wound and apply pressure with a bandage to stop bleeding.If you are helping someone else who is bleeding,use Latex gloves.

⑤Minor thermal burns(no blisters):Run cool water over burned area for at least 20 minutes.

⑥Severe thermal burns:Do not run water over burned area.Wrap loosely with clean,dry bandage,call 120 for immediate ambulance transport to the emergency room.

⑦Poisoning:Call 120 for immediate ambulance transport to the emergency room.

3. Fire

①Fires in ordinary combustible materials,such as wood,cloth,paper,rubber and many plastics.Almost any fire extinguisher is effective,but water is the best extinguishing agent.

②Fires in flammable liquids,gases,oil,paint and greases.Foam,dry chemical or CO 2 extinguishers are the most effective. Do not use water .

③Fires which involve energized electrical equipment where the electrical non-conductivity of the extinguishing agent is of importance.Use Carbon Dioxide or Dry Chemical extinguishers. Do not use water .

④Fires in combustible metals,such as magnesium,titanium,zirconium,sodium,lithium,zinc and potassium.Use metal fire extinguishing agent at safety stations or sand.

If the fire is too large to handle with extinguishers,pull a building alarm activator and evacuate the building.

1.2.3 Laboratory Trash

1. Empty Chemical Bottles

The empty chemical bottles were handed over to the laboratory administrator for disposal.

2. Sharps(e.g.,broken glass,needles,blades)

Never put sharps in your trash can.Discard all sharps into a puncture-resistant container that is clearly labels“sharps”.If necessary,clean the sharps before disposal.When the container is full,seal it with tape and ask the laboratory administrator to dispose of it.

3. Saturated Paper Waste
