Chapter 1

Salt Springs in "the Two-River Basin"and the Culture of Ancestors of the Bai Ethnic Group

The"Two-River Basin"here refers to the basin of the two rivers, namely Bijiang River(Yunlong County)and Bishui River(Yangbi County),two tributaries of Lancang River, with abundant salt springs. Bijiang River and Bishui River, originating from Yanlu Mountain(Xuebang Mountain),flow southward into Lancang River. The major salt wells in Erhai region are distributed in the valleys where Bijiang River and Bishui River flow pass. They are commonly known as"Long Jing"("dragon wells"). The main river basin of Bijiang River is in the present-day Yunlong County. At the time of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty,Bisu County was established in Yunlong. Along Bijiang River, there are Laji Well,Shundang Well,Shijing Well,Nuodeng Well,Shimen Well,Tianjing Well,Dajing Well and Baofeng Well(Jinquan Well). Bishui River mainly flows through present-day Misha in Jianchuan,Qiaohou in Eryuan,Yangbi County and other places. Along Bishui River are Misha Well,Qiaohou Well and the Three-Factory Bureau Salt Well in Yangbi. "Kunming people"were the first ancient ethnic group to discover and develop salt springs in the"two-river basin". +a8rArELppPJc9pptwUjdrtfaf9NP2sqzxpU9VIjjnUZvkc9Tx6ZAG10Z6B7uoTD
