My best holiday

Bo

Last year I went on an unusual holiday—I stayed with my family on a farm. It was an interesting experience because we lived a real country lifestyle. We got up at five in the morning, and we fed the animals, planted vegetables and looked after the crops. I loved the cows, because they’re so lovely and gentle. I became attached to one black and white cow named Daisy, who used to follow me around. I was very sad to leave!

Nicolas

I just came back from my first long trip. We went to Russia, where my family is from. It was exciting! First we went to the capital Moscow, which is full of amazing historical buildings. Then we stayed in a village where my relatives live. There’s a greater sense of community, and less pressure, than in the city. People grow most of what they eat in their gardens, and it tasted delicious. I think I’d like to live like that!

Sonia

My favourite holiday was when my family went hiking in the mountains. At first I thought it might be boring and I’d miss my friends and my phone. But in fact it was so nice to be away from the noisy, dirty city. The air was so fresh and the sky was so clear. We walked up and down the mountains each day, and camped at night. We cooked our food over a fire and sang songs with a guitar. It was very peaceful and calm!

Restaurant in London

By Darren Matthews, age 10

Last school holidays my mum and dad had to go away on business, so they asked if I’d like to spend a week in London with my Uncle John. I really like my uncle, and I’d never been to London, so I was very excited.

Uncle John lives in a small apartment very close to the River Thames. It’s a nice area to walk around. There are several parks with lots of trees.

My uncle also lives near his work, a fashionable restaurant. He works as a chef. On my second day in London he asked if I’d like to come with him to see how a restaurant kitchen works. He said I’d find it very interesting, although I’d need to be careful, as a kitchen can be a dangerous place.

The restaurant is well-known in this part of London, and at lunchtime it was full of customers. Uncle John managed the team in the kitchen like a true professional. Each cook looked after one thing: one person roasted meat, one boiled vegetables, and one made desserts. The meals came out quickly and they all looked beautiful.

After lunch, when all the customers had left, the cooks had a break and Uncle John and I stood alone in the kitchen. He asked me if I wanted to try to cook something. He showed me how to make an omelette, and I did it well the first time. He said in the future I would be a famous chef too!

14 Why didn’t Darren spend the holiday with his parents?

A Darren needed to go to London.

B Darren wanted to be with his friends.

C Darren’s parents had to work.

15 What is the area near John’s home like?

A crowded with people

B green and natural

C full of restaurants

16 What did Darren do on his second day in London?

A He ate in a restaurant.

B He walked around the neighbourhood.

C He visited his uncle at work.

17 How do the cooks prepare meals?

A Each cook has a different job.

B Each cook does many different things.

C The cooks prepare everything before lunchtime.

18 Why did John say Darren would be a famous chef?

A Darren worked hard in the kitchen.

B Darren cooked something well.

C Darren knows a lot about food.
