My neighbours are always busy, so my dad said I could offer to help doing odd jobs, and ask for a small payment in return. So first I just asked the people next door if they’d like me to help look after their garden, and they agreed. I cut the grass, and tidied the flower beds, and made everything look beautiful. The neighbours told other people in the street, and soon I had more requests than I could manage!

I’ve always loved flowers, and I grow all types of flowers in our back garden. One day I gave a bunch of my flowers to our neighbour Ms Davies. She said they were even prettier than the flowers in the local florist, and she suggested I could try selling them. At first I wasn’t sure how, but Ms Davies said I should print an advertisement and leave it at all the houses in the street. Soon I had ten orders a week. Now our garden is full of flowers!

People say I’m excellent at art. I think I’m good at painting nature, like trees and flowers. And my parents suggested I should have an exhibition! So I asked our local library if I could display some of my paintings there, and they said yes. Some visitors to the library asked if they could buy my paintings. Soon I was selling several paintings a week. Now I often paint pictures to order, of people’s houses and gardens.
For each question, choose the correct answer.
This year I moved to a new high school. It’s in a country town. Our home is in the city, but we’re living here in the countryside for a year because of my mum’s work. She’s a scientist, and she’s working on a project to help farmers.
The first thing I noticed was the size of the school. There are only three classrooms, and only twenty students! At my old high school there were nearly a thousand. It means Year 7 and 8 study in the same class. You might think that’s strange, since we have to learn different things. But the teachers manage it very well, and give us different work to do.
The school only has three teachers, and each teacher teaches two or three subjects. Yet they know a lot about each one. For example, Mr Harris takes maths, science and geography, but can answer any question we ask. The teachers are also very friendly and kind, and since the classes are small, we get to know them very well.
After class we often play sport and games. We have lots of space to run around because the school is surrounded by big green fields. Most students like football, and we have a school team that plays against other towns in the district on Saturdays. We hope to win the cup this year.
I’ve made two really good friends here. In fact they’re the only other students in Year 8, Joanna and Patrick. Joanna’s parents are farmers, and sometimes I visit their home and spend time with the animals.
School life in the countryside is really special, and I think I’m going to find it very strange moving back to the city next year.
