A new study has found that energy drinks may be a sort of gateway drug to smoking for teens. The study, which was published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine, found that nearly one-third of American teenagers drink energy drinks. They also reported higher levels of cigarette use.
The research team made this report by studying data on about 22,000 middle school students across the United States. In particular (尤其), the team looked at data on students in eighth, tenth and twelfth grades. They found that boys were more likely to use energy drinks than girls, and that use was higher for teens without two parents at home, as well as those with parents who were less educated. What surprised the research team the most was that the eighth graders—the youngest group—were the most likely to use energy drinks.
This study is the first to examine the influences of energy drink. But it did not prove that the use of energy drinks is the direct reason for the higher use of tobacco. It only stated the association between them.
“Education for parents and the efforts to prevent teenagers from using too much energy drinks should include education on the harmful influences energy drinks will bring. Besides, it should be realized that some groups such as high sensation-seeking (寻求高度刺激的) youth may be especially likely to use energy drinks and to be smokers,” the team wrote.
