Tuomas Eerola, professor of music cognition (认知) at Durham University, explains the three main reasons we like to hear sad songs. First, sad music can make you feel sad or lost. These experiences often aren’t delighted, but these feelings can be healthy. Sad music can also bring feelings of melancholy (忧郁). Melancholy, while often thought of as a harmful feeling, is actually quite useful to encourage people to create something new.

Lastly, those of us who lose ourselves in sad music may simply enjoy “being moved.” In a recent study led by Eerola, many people who listened to sad music described feeling many kinds of emotions all at once. Besides, the same people showed high levels of the ability to show empathy (感同身受) with someone else.

Empathy is one of the most important skills you can develop because it can make your relationships stronger and make you a happier, kinder person. So listen to sad songs and don’t hold yourself back from any feelings that are shown in sad music. And if sad music doesn’t do anything for you, practice your empathy and become the person everyone always wants around.
