34. 脱厌如释重 带恋如担枷
34. Out of poverty, the poor die content; burdened with wealth, the rich remain in fetters all their life.

贫贱之人,一无所有,及临命终时,脱一厌字;富贵之人,无所不有,及临命终时,带一恋字。脱一厌字,如释重负;带一恋字,如担枷锁。

【今文解译】

穷人一无所有,临当寿终时,他们挣脱的是对贫穷的厌恶;富人无所不有,临当寿终时,他们却还对自己的财产恋恋不舍。挣脱贫穷使穷人如释重负;对财产的恋恋不舍使富人到死都还像枷锁缠身一样。

【English Translation】

Poor people have nothing to their names; but when lying on death bed, they congratulate themselves on being able to shake off poverty. Rich people have everything they desire; but when at the end of their lives, they still cannot lay down the burden of wealth. Thanks to being free from poverty, the poor die content.
