14. 书画是雅事 贪痴亦商贾
14. Collecting and appreciating the calligraphies and paintings of notables are matters of elegance; but if too crazy about so doing, one will look like a merchant.

山栖是胜事，稍一萦恋 ^① ，则亦市朝 ^② ；书画赏鉴是雅事，稍一贪痴，则亦商贾；诗酒是乐事，稍一曲人，则亦地狱；好客是豁达事，稍一为俗子所扰，则亦苦海 ^③ 。

② 市朝：集市与朝廷。

【今文解译】

短栖山林是美事，但倘若迷上那儿不走了，山林也就成市井朝廷了。

赏鉴书画是兴味雅事，但倘若沉溺其中，雅事也就成商家的买卖了。

作诗饮酒是乐事，但倘若强劝而使人为之，乐事也就如同下地狱了。

好客是大方之举，但倘若稍有庸俗的人掺和进来，事情也就变味了。

Sojourning in the mountains is a joyful thing; but if one is too enchanted with it, the mountains will turn into marketplace or imperial court.

Collecting and appreciating the calligraphies and paintings of notables are matters of elegance; but if too crazy about so doing, one will look like a merchant.

Verse-composing and wine-drinking are pleasant things; but if done against the will of others, they will soon serve like a hell.
