2.2 Analysis of Audience

Audience consideration is important to all writings, but it holds an essential role in determining the quality, effectiveness, or success of arguments. As most arguments aim to convince or persuade a particular group of people, it is critical to understand this group of people.Arguments, especially the dialogic and classical arguments, are audience-based.This can be easily illustrated. For example, when college students and their parents differ in their choice of a college major, they may highlight its flexibility of future job prospect and its essential role in future study abroad to persuade their parents their choice of English literature major is a better choice than their parents’ choice of the chemistry major. But when interviewed by English college professors about their choice of English literature major, they may highlight how much passionately they have been reading, writing about, and discussing about English literature. This example demonstrates that even though it is the same position, the writer may need to highlight different reasons when appealing to a different audience. Therefore, understanding who your audience is,what they look like, what you need to do to appeal to them, and what you want your audience to do is an important part of the audience awareness and consideration.Generally speaking, arguments have a target audience as their primary audience and the general audience as their secondary audience. The values, beliefs, and attitudes of our audience can vary in terms of their gender, age, profession, religion, social class, interests, etc. Therefore, when considering the audience, we need to examine the values, beliefs and attitudes of both primary audience and secondary audience. 3uJONKLxsFyZS7Pjo2fHFzUAx1MtPiXX6/4++hkk6S9zF5aLGsoh9XNrwkiITliG
