Do you know how many different kinds of animals there are in the world? There are so many different kinds of animals in the world that we cannot count them all.

We know the names of some animals, don’t we? We know the names of some animals people like to look after as pets. Those are animals like dogs, cats, fish, rabbits and parrots.
我们知道一些动物的名称，是吗？人们喜欢把一些动物当作宠物照顾，我们知道它们的名称。那些动物有狗、猫、鱼、兔子和鹦鹉。
We know the names of some farm animals, too. Those are animals like cows, chickens and ducks.

We also know the names of some kinds of wild animals like tigers, snakes, rats, monkeys and elephants. Sometimes, we can see those animals in a zoo. We have to be careful when we are near wild animals because some of them can be dangerous.

In this book, we will learn about many of the different kinds of animals. We cannot learn about all the animals in the world – there are too many of them. But we can learn about some of them.

We will study what the different animals like to eat. We will learn where in the world the different animals live and which places they like to go. Yes. I want to learn everything about rats. I want to learn what they eat, the places they go to, how long they live – everything!
Tom
Why are you so interested in rats? Nobody likes rats!
Lee
Well I do. Out of all the animals in the world, I think rats are the most interesting – rats and snakes.
Tom
Snakes too?
Lee
Yes. I like to talk to my sister about rats and snakes.
Tom
Why?
Lee
Because she doesn’t like them, and she really doesn’t like it when I talk about them.
Tom
Why not?
Lee
Because she doesn’t like dangerous or dirty animals.
Tom
You’re not very nice to your sister, are you?
Lee
No, I’m not. I’m not nice to her because she’s not nice to me.
李
