Mommy and Pat are sitting at the breakfast table together. Tomorrow is Pat’s birthday. She will be nine years old tomorrow. Pat knows something about Mommy – she knows that Mommy is going to go shopping for her birthday present today.

Mommy

I see. Well, I’ll think about it. Now, where’s Lee? He should be here with us, having his breakfast.

Pat

He’s washing his face and combing his hair in the bathroom. Lee was very tired this morning. He didn’t want to get out of bed. He didn’t want to wash his face, comb his hair and brush his teeth.

Mommy

Really? What about you, Pat? Did you brush your teeth this morning?

Pat

Yes, I did. I always brush my teeth before I come down for breakfast.

Mommy

Good. I’m very pleased to hear that.

Pat

Mommy, when you make my birthday cake, will it be big enough for all my friends?

Mommy

Oh, yes. I think so.

Pat

Well, when you give everybody a plate of cake, don’t give a lot to Tom.

Mommy

Why not?

Pat

Because Tom always wants to eat too much. He will eat more than my friends if you let him.
