Now, it is Tuesday afternoon and the children are in their classroom. They are already sitting on their chairs. The teacher is not there yet. The children are waiting for the teacher to come so she can tell them what they have to do today.

Pat thinks she would like a per rabbit or a bird. Lee doesn’t want Daddy to buy him a pet rabbit or a bird. Lee would like Daddy to get him a pet snake!

I would like a pet rabbit – a white one. I think rabbits are really beautiful, and they’re not difficult to look after.

Lee

What if the pet shop doesn’t sell rabbits?

Pat

Well, if I can’t have a pet rabbit, I would like to have a bird. I would like to have a bird that can speak. I would like to have a bird I can teach to speak English.

Lee

I don’t want a rabbit or a bird. I want a pet snake.

Pat

Lee! You know Daddy won’t let you have a snake. You know that already.

Lee

Well, I will ask him again.

Pat

Snakes are not pets, Lee! Pets are animals like dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and fish. Snakes can’t live in a house with people.

Lee

Ah, but I can let my pet snake stay outside the house. I can put it near the chicken house and give it some grass to eat.

Pat

If you do that the snake will eat the small chickens. Snakes like to eat small animals like those. Snakes don’t eat grass. They eat living animals.

Lee

Do they? I didn’t know that.

Pat

Well, you know now. Try to think of some other pet you would like, but don’t ask Daddy to get you a snake. If you do, he won’t like it.

Lee

All right. I’ll think of some other pet. Ah! I think I know already. Yes. I know what I will ask Daddy to buy me.

Pat

Lee

Ah! Wait and see! I’ll tell you when we get to the pet shop.
