Chiang Kai-shek is not the handpicked heir of Sun Yat-sen any more than Mao Zedong is the leader named by the Comintern. The Comintern has Chiang deliver his report and writes Mao's obituary. Chiang has experience of running a magazine and Mao has experience in running a newspaper. Both journey from wielding the pen to holding the gun. Chiang's military journey starts at Whampoa Military Academy, and Mao's at the Jinggang Mountains. Mao comes to know Chiang from military warfare, and Chiang comes to know Mao the same way.
