Unit 1
Scheduling

MP3-5

In order to go into a trade show there's a lot of preparation that must be done. A display must be prepared, but there are other things to arrange before that. The business must organize who will be present at the booth and who will stay behind to man the daily operations.A business might choose not to enter a trade show even though workers want to go.If the trade show is held at a time of year that's bad for the business, it's not a good idea to go.A business cannot compromise sales just to go in a trade show.

Dialogue 1

A:We need to decide if it's even feasible for us to be in the trade show this year.

B:They normally hold it in September. That's fine because that's when we're quiet.

A:But this year they're holding it in February. That's our busiest time of year.

B:Can we afford to have at least two staff members away for three full days?

A:I don't know. That's what we have to decide together.

B:Let's call a staff meeting. We'll talk to the whole team about our concerns.

Dialogue 2

A:The problem with the show on that weekend is that's when I've booked my vacation.

B:I don't see that as a problem. Go on your vacation. We'll manage while you're gone.

A:But I like to be at the trade show. I think it's important that I be there.

B:Is it too late to rearrange your holiday?Maybe you could go the day after the show.

A:I don't know. I'll have to talk to my travel agent.

If I can't be there, I want you to be.

B:Okay. We might have to bring an extra person in for those three days though.

Dialogue 3

A:Are you sure you can handle the whole show by yourself?

B:Yes. Besides I don't think we have a choice.

We're short staffed as it is.

A:We can always pull out. We don't have to go.

There's always next year.

B:But we'd lose our payment on the booth. It's nonrefundable.

A:But it only cost us three hundred dollars. If we can't have people there, so be it.

B:It's not just the money. We always get huge sales after being in that show.

Dialogue 4

A:I talked to Anne about it and we think we can manage at the show by ourselves.

B:I really want to have three people there. You guys will be exhausted.

A:I don't think so. When it's quiet one of us can take off for a quick break.

B:I guess you don't both have to be there every second. Okay.

A:Great. That way we won't be understaffed back here.

B:I'll also get someone to pop in and check on you once or twice a day.

A:太好了。

Dialogue 5

A:We don't think this trade show is right for us, Fred.

B:Why not?

A:It's a farm and ranch trade show. It's going to be cattle and farm products.

B:We sell real estate. We sell lands and buildings.

Don't farmers need those things?

A:I know but real estate is seen more as business and less as agriculture.

B:You might have a point. Farmers don't deal with real estate agents everyday.

Dialogue 6

A:She found out that there are two shows coming up this year that would be good for us.

B:So what are they?

A:There's the home and leisure show that the Royal Elks put on each spring.

B:Yes. We did that one, last year.It went well as I recall.

A:It did. There's a new one too.It's a business trade show.

B:I know the one you're talking about. It's sponsored by a communications company.

A:的确。

Dialogue 7

A:He's decided that we can't do the show this year.

B:Why not?We do that show every year. I like doing the show.

A:I know. But you have to remember that we're short staffed.

B:Do you think if we got the positions filled quickly that he might change his mind?

A:I don't know. We don't have much time. There's a lot of preparation needed.

B:No, there isn't. We paid a lot of money for the display we bought last year.

A:我知道。
