中午12点结账退房是酒店行业内通用的国际惯例，超过中午12点结账，就要加收房费，为此很多消费者感到不满。因为如果住宿不满24小时也要中午12点结账，并且按一天收费，这对消费者来说显然不公平。而且午餐时间一般是11点半到12点半，结账时间正好卡在中间，这让很多客人不得不拎着行李就餐。
在美国，位于纽约时代广场附近的威斯汀酒店、威灵顿酒店，以及不远处的巴克莱洲际酒店，其入住时间均为下午3点，而结账时间无一例外均为中午12点。中间的空档期则是打扫、整理房间的时间，如果12点不退房，一般要另交半天房费。
在英国伦敦，惯例是下午2点入住，中午12点结账，入住时间略微提前，但结账时间依然是12点。位于伦敦肯圣盾广场的假日酒店和索菲特圣詹姆士酒店如果12点不退房，则要适当收费；伦敦斯马特卡姆登旅馆的规定是，延迟退房需多交10英镑，大约相当于半天房费。
澳大利亚不仅在地理位置上距欧美很远，在旅馆的规矩上也不太一样。在悉尼，入住时间一般为下午2点，而结账时间竟然是上午10点或11点，比12点更加“苛刻”。在悉尼中心商务区的悉尼达令港诺福特饭店和假日旅馆等都是如此，如果到点不退房，就要另交半天房租。悉尼米纳尔花园酒店规定，最晚早10点结账，如果房间另有预订，则10点必须拎包走人，如果没有预订，则可以最晚下午6点结账，但需要另外支付半天房费。
