The Eiffel Tower （埃菲尔铁塔） is one of Europe’s most f 1 buildings. It stands in a park near the River Seine in Paris. It is 300 meters tall. It was designed and b 2 by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel many years ago for the Paris Universal Exposition （巴黎世博会）. “Universal” here means “of the whole world”, and “exposition” is a p 3 where new inventions, new kinds of art and new kinds of food are displayed （展示）.
Eiffel h 4 that people could go to the top of the tower easily, so he asked Elisha Otis to design an elevator. Unfortunately, the French government did not like the first design which Otis showed them, and they would not l 5 him put the elevator in. In early 1889, the first visitors had to climb hundreds of stairs to get to the t 6 .
It’s interesting that Eiffel himself lived in the tower where he had his own apartment. Although Eiffel designed the tower for people to visit, it was also for scientific use. Now, the tower gets much more v 7 than another famous building— the Louvre （卢浮宫）.
