Some universities expect the students to choose a field of study when they enter the school, while other universities let students wait until the second or the third year before deciding a major. Which do you prefer? Why?
I think it’s better to let students decide their majors later. A lot of schools actually do this:students are exposed to a wide variety of general courses in the first or two years in college. This helps student have a better understanding of what they like or what they don’t. They are more likely to make informed decisions on what to study later. If students have to decide their majors when they first enter school, what usually happens is that quite some students just hate what they study. They don’t put in the effort and they have bad grades, which really undermines their confidence. That’s why a lot of students end up changing majors and a whole year’s time is wasted.
