Case Method and Teachers’Education

Case method plays an important role in teachers’education.First,let’s clarify the concept,significance and the process of case method,and then do further exploration.

In this part,we look at the concept,significance of the case method,the process of the case method,and its relation to teachers’education.

2.1.1 Concept of case method

Case method refers to a process of teaching and learning in which cases can be used as teaching materials.Teachers combine the materials with the topic of class to achieve teacher-student interaction by discussing,questioning,and answering.It is the teaching method that makes learners understand the relevant concept or theory in connection with the topic,and cultivates the higher-level teaching capacity.

2.1.2 Significance of case method

· Verbal expression skills

· Time management skills

· Personal communication skills

· Skills of creativity

· Written presentation skills

2.1.3 Process of case method:Preparing-discussion-reflection

Beginning :(1) Reading; (2)5W-1H questions; (3) Appendix and other information;(4)About the titles;(5)Skimming and scanning;(6)Questions.

Further preparation :(1)Recognizing the problem;(2)Analyzing:Cause-effect;conditions& opportunities; (3) Alternatives; (4) Determining the criteria;(5)Analyzing and evaluating;(6)Forming the action and implementing.

Discussion in class:

(1)Discussion in group;

(2)3—5 in one group;

(3)Making clearly the contents and procedures;

(4)Problem-solving:Pay attention to the discussion;listen effectively;note-taking;participate in solving special problems.

Reflection after class:

(1)After discussion,have a short summary immediately.

(2)Questions you may ask:Have I understand the whole materials of the case?What do I learn from it?

(3)Reflect yourself and other members.

2.1.4 Case method in teachers’education

案例在教师教育中起着越来越重要的作用,对英语教育方向的学生来说,利用案例,可以提前了解职场环境及工作中可能存在的问题,通过案例分析,提高认识问题、解决问题的能力,是为培养英语教育方向的学生从事教育、教学工作的专业能力的重要手段之一,能够克服教师专业性不足和经验匮乏的弊端,也体现了新时期教学改革和发展的要求。本书版权页的二维码中有延伸阅读资料,详细地讨论了案例教学在教师教育中的应用。

教师教育中的案例教学具有多种取向,并以案例为重心,以提高教师的专业性。

(1)教师教育中案例教学的取向

一是理论取向,主张案例即理论。舒尔曼(Shulman,2007)认为案例的界定、分析和拓展都奠基于教育的专业理论之上,并将案例教学界定为教师专业化的重要组成部分。二是实践取向,突出教师教育中的教育实践能力。三是技术取向,突出教师将理论或科学原则应用于实际情景的技术、技巧。四是教师发展取向,主张教师在解决教育问题的同时推动个人发展。五是批判取向,把进步的社会观与激进的教育批判相结合。

(2)案例教学的重心:案例而非教学

教师教育中的案例教学,更多地在于培养教师的专业性,以解决人们对于教师专业性欠缺的不满,其注重教育专业理论的应用,即“教师不在于拥有知识,而在于应用知识”。案例具有多重“再认识和多重表征的潜力”,并反映出案例的多样化应用。同时,学科中心论的教学取向,也要求案例教学是通过案例来统整教学而非相反。事实上,在满足教学目标方面,案例教学相对于讨论法和启发式教学并没有明显优势。由此可见,案例教学的重心与优势在于案例而非教学。

因此,教师教育中案例教学的核心在于深化教育教学理念,并通过以案例为中心的教学来提高教师的专业性。
