72 序数词的表示法

序数词（ordinal numbers）是表示数目顺序的词。与第70节表格中Ⅰ至Ⅲ栏基数词相对应的序数词如下：

除上面列出的词外，其他序数词通常都通过在基数词尾加-th构成：

a. 几个特殊拼法的序数词（见上表）为：

first（第一），second（第二），third（第三），fifth（第五），eighth（第八），ninth（第九），twelfth（第十二），twentieth（第二十）等。

b. 由one, two, three, five, eight, nine收尾的多位数词变为序数词参照第一条办法：

twenty-first（第二十一），thirty-second（第三十二），sixty-fifth（第六十五），a hundred and fifty-second（第一百五十二）

c. 在基数词尾加-th构成序数词：

ninety-seventh（第九十七）

two hundred and thirty-sixth（第二百三十六）

序数词可缩写为1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th……

73 序数词在句子中的作用

序数词的用法：

序数词在句中主要用作：

a. 定语（前面都加定冠词）：

The first three runners won medals. 跑步比赛跑的前三名获得了奖牌。

China is the second biggest colour cotton nation in the world. 中国是世界上第二大彩棉生产国。

She received a MP4 for her twentieth birthday. 她二十岁生日时收到了一个MP4。

It was the third time I had been there. 这是我第三次到那里。

b. 表语：

She was second in line（in her class）. 她排名第二（在班上是第二名）。

I’m sure you’d be the first to be sorry if anything bad was to happen to him. 如果他有什么不测的话，我敢肯定你将是第一个伤心的人。

c. 主语：

First went to the American team. 第一名被美国队拿去了。

The first（one）was no good; the second was better. 第一个不行，第二个好一点。

The third of the month was a holiday. 那个月的三号放假。

d. 宾语或介词宾语：

This tennis player ranked third in the world. 这位网球运动员排名世界第三。

I was among the first to arrive. 我是第一批到的。

She stopped at the first of the crossroad. 她在第一个十字路口前停了下来。

序数词的一些其他用法：

a. 和a连用，表示“再一个”“又一次”等：

Shall I ask her a third time? 我还要问她一次吗？

When he sat down, a fourth man rose to speak. 他坐下后，又一个人起来发言。

A second pheasant flew up. Then a third and a fourth. 又有一只雉鸡飞了起来，接着又有一只，又有一只。

b. 表示日期：

June 23rd 六月二十三日

October 1st 十月一日

February 2nd 二月二日

August 31st 八月三十一日

c. 构成短语：

first class 第一流

first-rate 头等的

second cousin 远房（表）姐妹或兄弟

second-hand 第二手的；旧货

second thought（s） 再次考虑

second to none 头等的，最好的

用基数词表示顺序的办法：

在很多情况下，我们可以基数词代替序数词表示顺序，例如：

the first part→part one（第一部分）

the fourth chapter→chapter four（第四章）

the twenty-third section→section twenty-three（第二十三节）

the hundred and fourth division→division 104（第104师）

带编号的东西，通常不用序数词表示，读法也简单化，如：
