Manchester United, the world’s richest football club, said it will overcome a fall in sponsorship revenues and will achieve its sales targets for the year.
Reporting results for the three months to 30 September, the English Premier League side said overall revenues fell to £135m over the period, compared to £143.7m a year earlier, a six per cent decline.
The club said the drop was explained by a fall in sponsorship revenues due to a shorter than usual summer tour of “friendly” matches in the United States, as well as making less in matchday income because the team has played two fewer matches at its home ground of Old Trafford at the start of the season compared to the same period last year.
Ed Woodward, executive vice chairman, provided an upbeat assessment of the club’s financial performance and prospects for the year.
He said a new sponsorship deal with denim brand True Religion and renewed endorsement contracts with Canon Medical Systems and Deezer will keep it on track to achieve full-year revenues between £615m and £630m, with adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation projected to be between £175m and £190m.
“Our financial strength enables us to continue to attract and retain top players and to invest in our academy, as we look to drive the success on the pitch that the club and our fans expect,” said Mr Woodward.
“We remain on track to deliver our record full-year revenue guidance, underpinning our long-term, strategic plan to create sustainable growth across all areas of the club.”
However, the club faces pressure from weakening performances on the pitch. Manchester United is eighth in the Premier League table following a poor start to the season, with the team unlikely to mount a challenge to win the English title.
It is, however, well placed to progress in the Champions League, with an extended stay in Europe’s most prestigious club competition able to provide a boost from additional broadcasting and prize money.
