In 1987,H.I.V/AIDS joined a list of diseases that could keep a person out of the UnitedStates. The government later tried to cancel its decision. But Congress madethe travel ban a part of immigration law. People with H.I.V., the virus thatcauses AIDS, could seek an exception, but that meant extra work.
Last year,Congress and President George W. Bush began the process of ending the travelban. Now President Obama is finishing that process.
BARACK OBAMA:“We talk about reducing the stigma of this disease, yet we have treated avisitor living with it as a threat. We lead the world when it comes to helpingstem the AIDS pandemic, yet we are one of only a dozen countries that still barpeople with H.I.V. from entering our own country.”
A final rulepublished Monday will end the travel ban effective January fourth. H.I.V. willno longer be a condition that can exclude people. And H.I.V. testing will nolonger be required for those who need a medical examination for immigrationpurposes. AIDS has killed more than twenty-five million people since the early1980s.
In September, there was news that a vaccine showed some ability to prevent H.I.V. infectionin humans for the first time. The full results of the vaccine study werepresented in late October at an international conference in Paris. They werealso reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers confirmedthat the study in Thailand produced only “modest” results.
The UnitedStates Army sponsored the vaccine trial. The study combined two vaccines, usingversions of H.I.V. common in Thailand. Neither vaccine alone had shown successin earlier studies.
Thai researcherstested the combination in more than 16,000 volunteers. Half of the volunteersgot the vaccine. The others got a placebo, an inactive substance. All weregiven condoms and counseling on AIDS prevention for three years. The studyfound 31 percent fewer cases of infection in the vaccine group than in theplacebo group.
But critics saidthe findings could possibly have resulted from chance. The announcement inSeptember was based on all 16, 000 volunteers. Almost one-third of them, however, did not follow all the required steps in the study. Results just fromthose who did were similar to the larger group, but the influence of chance wasmore of a possibility.
Still, theresearchers said the study produced enough valuable information to offer newhope for AIDS research.

“Two hundredeight million, two hundred nine million, two hundred ten million ....” That isthe sound of solid waste hitting the bottom of garbage cans all over UnitedStates in 1996. Solid wastes are materials that are discarded or thrown awayafter use by consumers and businesses. This does not include fluid materials.During that year, Americans threw away 210 million tons (about 4.3 pounds/2 kilogramsper person daily)ofgarbage. We threw away 12.4 million tons of glass and about 80 million tons ofpaper products. Americans also threw away large amounts (in tons)of food scraps, yard wastes, plastics, sludge from sewage treatment plants, and other materials. That isalmost a mountain of garbage!
Even though wemake an effort to recycle and compostour solid waste, the amount of waste keeps increasing each year. Our biggestproblem is where to put the solid waste and how to keep it from polluting ourenvironment. If solid waste is disposed of incorrectly, it can contaminate oursurface and underground water supplies. Currently, our municipal waste or wastecollected by our cities and towns, goes to landfills. Today, about 85% of ourgarbage goes to landfills or garbage dumps. This waste must be treated to keeprats, flies, and other animals from building their homes in the landfill. Thetreatment also prevents the growth of bacteria and other organisms that carrydiseases. So, how do we handle this mountain of garbage? Scientists have comeup with different methods for handling our waste problem.
One type ofwaste, disposal called sanitary landfill was first used in Fresno California,in 1937. In sanitary landfills, the solid waste is spread in thin layers thatare compacted and covered with a layer of earth. This is a more expensivemethod, but it takes away the health hazards that are caused by landfills. Italso allows the land to be used for building or recreation. The negative partabout these landfills is that it is tough to find open land and this process isvery expensive. The land also needs have its water sources protected so thatthe waste will not pollute the water supply. Landfills (open dumps)and sanitary landfills rely onthe natural biodegradability of the solid wastes. Solid waste are biodegradableif they can decay or break down through the action of living organisms andreturn to the earth. However, certain materials take longer to decay thanothers, and some materials do not decay or decompose at all. Scientists neededto search for other methods of waste disposal. Incineration and recycling aretwo methods that are currently in use today.
26. This article is about the disposalproblem of solid waste ______.
A. by consumers
B. inCalifornia
C. by municipalgovernments
D. in America
27. From the article we can infer that ______.
A. treatment ofsolid waste is a hard nut to crack

B. Sanitarylandhill is a type of waste disposal method once used in California.
C. Burning isnot a method that is used today to treat waste.
D. Compostingis still one of the ways to handle the mountain of garbage.
Today, about 85% of our garbage goes to landfills or garbage dumps可知C项正确。
30. C 根据文章最后一句话Incineration(焚烧) and recycling are two methods that are currently in use today可知C项不正确。
Who would havethought we would become a planet of “ologies”? There’s biology, psychology, herpetology, etymology, and geology just to name a few. However, one “ology”truly helps us to understand the most important part of our planet—ourenvironment. Ecology (which is filled with ecologists) is the study ofecosystems and the beings and organisms that inhabit those ecosystems. Justthink, in addition to the bees, deer, and other organisms, you are important toecologists.
Ecosystems arecommunities that vary in size and location. They can be as small as a patch ofgrass or as large as the entire biosphere. The many varieties of plants andanimals that exist in our planet’s ecosystems are important to the survival ofour ecosystems. Plants in particular provide the oxygen and nutrients allorganisms need to survive. These producers have the ability to use the sun’s energy to produce food (thinkphotosynthesis). This is where the animals or consumers become important. Theanimals get their energy by eating the plants and other organisms within theecosystem. Without the producers and consumers, decomposers would not have a job. As you may have guessed, decomposers, like bacteria, stepin to break down the waste excreted from animals and the remains of deadorganisms. Once broken down, the organic materials are absorbed by the soil andgases are sent back into our atmosphere. The whole process is ready to startagain through the Earth’s natural cycles. There has to be a balance ofproducers, consumers, and decomposers in order to maintain a balancedecosystem.
Remember, allorganisms need matter and energy to survive. An ecosystem is balanced whenmatter and energy move efficiently through those ecosystems. Just as yourbackpack has a limit on the number of huge textbooks it can carry at any giventime, all ecosystems have a limit on the populations they can maintain.Carrying capacity is the largest population an ecosystem can support at anyparticular time. The support of this population depends on the amount ofresources (matter and energy) that are available and the movement of thoseresources within that ecosystem. If energy and matter are moving efficientlythrough an ecosystem, then the current population of plants and animals has notreached beyond the ecosystem’s carrying capacity. Once food resources dwindleor animal populations increase dramatically, the ecosystem may not be able tosupport those populations. Fortunately, nature has three ways to control thebalance of ecosystems: ecological responses to change; energy transfer; andfood chains and food webs.
31. The purpose of starting the articlewith the word-ending “ology” (Line 1) is ______.
A. to trace theorigin of “ology”

In modern days,on the western bank of the upper Tigris River stands an Iraqi city calledQal’at Sharqat. Thousands of years ago, this very site was once the capital ofa great Mesopotamian empire. At the time, the place had a different name. Itwas called Ashur or Assur. The word Ashur eventually gave rise to the termAssyria, which was the northern part of Mesopotamia. People living in thatregion later became known as the Assyrians.
Historians oftendivide the long history of Assyria into three periods even though they cannotreach a consensus over the exact dates of each era. The three periods were theOld Assyrian Period (circa 2000 B.C. - 1400 B.C.), the Middle Assyrian Period(circa 1365 B.C. - 1100 B.C.), and the Neo-Assyrian Empire (circa 934 B.C. -609 B.C.)
Archaeologicalevidence showed that people began to settle in Ashur as early as 2500 B.C. Butit did not attain any political significance until the 3rd dynasty of Urcollapsed in 2004 B.C. After that fiasco, the Assyrians transformed Ashur intoa bustling commercial center, controlling trade routes to and from Anatolia. In1813 B.C., the first great Assyrian King, Shamshi-Adad I, ascended the throneand began a series of military expansions. At the height of his reign, hiskingdom owned the entire northern Mesopotamia. Its growing influence gave itsneighbors plenty of reasons to be wary. While things were going splendidly forthis Assyrian upstart, Shamshi-Adad passed away in 1791 B.C. Soon after hisdeath, the kingdom began to fall apart. Knowing that Shamshi-Adad’s empire wason the verge of collapse, Hammurabi of the 1st dynasty of Babylon jumped at thechance and invaded northern Mesopotamia. He conquered Ashur in 1760 B.C. Fromthat point on to the middle of the 1300s B.C., Assyria was reduced to a merevassal state. At first, it had to answer to the 1st dynasty of Babylon. Afterthat empire was eradicated, it turned to submit to a Hurrian kingdom calledMitanni. It was not until 1365 B.C. that Assyria, then ruled by Ashur-uballitI, was able to regain its independence. For the next couple hundred years,Assyria grew increasingly powerful. It eventually defeated Babylonia and evenoccupied Egypt.

A line in a songasks, “Does anybody really know what time it is?” This question could easilyapply to calendars! Did you know that our ideas about time are affected byreligion? Different faiths use different types of calendars to measure time.
Odd structures, such as Stonehenge in England, may have been used to measure time long ago. These ancient rocks stand in a circle like large, gray Legos. Some people thinkthat the rocks relate to the position of the sun. No one knows how people movedthem into this formation, but it was probably a lot of work. If it was acalendar, it sure was a big one! The Aztecs also had a rock calendar that wasrelated to the sun. They had a Sun Stone that showed their sun god in thecenter.
The calendar youare probably most familiar with is also based on the sun. The powerful RomanEmperor, Julius Caesar, first adopted the solar calendar in 46 B.C. The cycleof the year in a solar calendar is measured from one equinox to the next. Asolar calendar has to be adjusted every so often to keep in time with the sun.In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII first authorized taking a few days out of every yearfor the purpose of adjusting the calendar. People didn’t like this one bitbecause they thought they were losing time! It tool centuries for Europeans toget used to this concept.
Eventually, asystem was worked out to add a single day to the calendar every four years soit was synchronized with the seasons. The extra day made every fourth year 366days long. These special years are called leap years, and we add the extra dayto the month of February. If you know someone whose birthday is on February 29,you know that he or she was born in a leap year. This calendar is called theGregorian calendar, and it is used in the United States and other Christiancountries.
Muslims use adifferent king of calendar. Their lunar calendar is based on the cycles of themoon, and it is completely different than a solar one. According to the Muslimholy book, the Koran, Allah said, “Truly, twelve months is the number of themonths with God, according to God’s Book, ever since He created heaven andEarth.” A new Muslim month does not start until two reliable witnesses haveseen the new moon. Muslim families often take walks in the evening to find thefirst yellow slice of the new moon to start Ramadan, their month-log fast.

Julius Caesar, first adopted the solar calendar in 46 B.C.
For anyone whohas experienced an earthquake, the experience can be frightening and traumatic. In addition to the movement of the ground, people need to be concerned withcollapsing buildings and falling debris, such as flying glass. The majority ofthe injuries and deaths that occur from earthquakes are due to falling objectsand structures. The effects of an earthquake can also cause dangerouslandslides, fires, gas line and electric explosions, and floodwaters fromcollapsing dams. The goal of seismologists is to understand why earthquakes andother seismic activity on Earth. This information, when shared with people inearthquake-prone areas, can help decrease the number of deaths and injuriesthat may occur.
One of the mostdestructive effects of earthquakes is tsunami. Tsunamis, giant ocean waves, form after an earthquake has occurred on the ocean floor. If the tsunamicrashes into land, it may cause serious destruction. The difficulty withprotecting people from tsunamis is that they may come without warning and at anextremely high speed. Once undersea earthquakes occur, the ocean floor rises orsinks. This is when tsunamis may begin to form. Along with this shifting of theocean floor, there is also a large mass of seawater that may drop or rise. Toadjust to the sudden change in sea level, the mass of water moves upward ordownward. As it is moving, a series of long, low waves begin to move from thepoint of the epicenter outward. These waves will increase in height as theycome closer to the shore underwater landslides caused by earthquakes may alsoform tsunamis.
On land, thefocus of an earthquake’s destruction is usually buildings and property. Most ofthe buildings today are built using strict building codes. These codes requirethat the buildings can withstand the swaying motion of the ground during anearthquake. However, there are building with weak walls that may collapsecompletely during a quake. Extremely tall buildings, like skyscrapers, may swayso violently that they may tip over and cause damage to lower structuresnearby. One factor that affects the intensity of an earthquake is the localgeology. The type of land that is beneath buildings can determine the way thebuildings respond to an earthquake. Buildings on solid ground are more likelyto withstand an earthquake than buildings that are constructed on loose soiland rock. Likely rock and soil vibrate as if they were jelly. When buildingsare constructed on this type of land, they tend to have an exaggerated motionand to sway violently.

In the firstplace, extra studies bring about unhealthy impacts on physical growth ofchildren. Educational experts point out that, it is equally important to takesome sport activities instead of extra studies when children have spent thewhole day in a boring classroom. Since children are undergoing fast physicaldevelopment, lack of physical exercise may produce disastrous influence ontheir later life. In the second place, from psychological aspect, the majorityof children seem to tend to have an unfavorable attitude toward additionaleducational activities. It is hard to imagine a student focusing their energyon textbook while other children are playing. Moreover, children will have lesstime to play and communicate with their peers due to extra studies, consequently, it is difficult to develop and cultivate their character andinterpersonal skills. They may become more solitary and even suffer fromcertain mental illness. From what has been discussed above, we may safely drawthe conclusion that, although extra studies indeed enjoy many obviousadvantages, its disadvantages shouldn’t be ignored and far outweigh itsadvantages. It is absurd to force children to take extra studies after school. Anyparents should place considerable emphasis on their children to keep thebalance between play and study. As an old saying goes: All work and no playmakes Jack a dull boy.

In China, for along time, due to the restrictions of the natural environment, economicdevelopment and traditional ideas, China’s rural education is less developedthan that in the city. Though the economy in rural areas has improved a lot,the situation of Chinese rural education is not optimistic, which needs moreattention from Chinese government.
First andforemost, in most rural areas of China, the schools are underdeveloped andstudents must study under very hard conditions. When I was a voluntary teacherin a rural primary school, I saw many of my students take hours of precipitous mountainpath to school. Secondly, Chinese rural schools face a serious shortage ofteachers, especially competent teachers. What’s more, there is plenty of roomfor improvement in the rural education quality. These are several factors thatrestrict the development of rural education.
Since the loweducation level in the rural area contributes partly to the gap of living and thecurrent situation of Chinese rural education is quite worrying, the Chinese governmentshould pay more attention and invest more on rural education. Firstly, morefunds should be invested in rural education infrastructure and teacherstraining. Secondly, Chinese government can call for college students or otherqualified people to do voluntary teaching in these less developed areas. Thirdly, associated law system should be completed to facilitate rural educationdevelopment. In addition, the whole society from citizens to the government andthe international organizations should hang together and give their hands totake actions to help and solve the issue.
