In 1950, almost 600 million hectares ofgrain were harvested worldwide. During the 1950’s, the USSR initiated a Virgin lands Program, which greatly enlarged the area harvested to about650 million hectares. From that point until the mid-1970’s, the area harvested grew slowly with a few fluctuations, to about 700 million hectares. And then, around 1975, the price of grain doubled and this caused a rapid increase inthe amount of land devoted to grain production till 1980. From 1980 to 1995,there was a gradual decrease in the amount of land used for grain cultivation.And then, the area devoted to grain production began to rise again.

To sum up, we can see that the areaharvested was affected by both the government policy and the market forces.

The largestquantity of goods transported both in 1974 and 2002 was by road (70 million tonnesand 98 million tonnes respectively) while the lowest was by pipeline (about 5million tonnes and 22 million tonnes respectively). The amount of goodstransported by water was steady from 1974 to 1978, but thereafter it showed an exponentialgrowth, rising to almost 60 million tonnes, after which it plateaued for about20 years before starting to rise gradually again.

The amount of goodstransported by rail remained almost constant at 40 million tonnes in 1974 and2002, with decreases in quantity in between the years. Notably, almost allmodes showed a decrease in 1994 in the amount of goods transported except the pipeline, which, on the contrast, peaked that year.
