1. She seemed frozen in an eternal panic lest the bath towel slip down any farther; and since she had no arms, she was in an unfortunate position to pull the towel up again: 本句首先要注意lest之后引导的句子需用虚拟语气。区分farther和further,前者指的是实际的具体的距离,而further指的是程度上的抽象的距离。本句中frozen一词用的极为精妙,表现出人物极为惊恐的样子,含有一种被动的意味。如果没有frozen 则表现不出是一种被动的意味。

2. Next to her, crouched the statuette of a leopard, ready to spring down at the top drawer of a filing cabinet: 本句为倒装句,正常语序为the statuette of leopard crouched next to her。注意此处用的动词短语spring down,非常形象生动,比用jump更能描绘出豹子跳跃时的姿态。

3. As we now say, I was not integrated, I was, if anything, disintegrated: 本句用了not integrated 和disintegrated 来强调作者本人很调皮。if anything 表示“相反,甚至还不如说”。The environment is not good. If anything, it is becoming worse andworse.

4. Whenever I found myself in a penal position before the headmaster’s desk I would sink my head, and writhe one shoe over the other: 本句用了两个动词,sink和writhe来表现作者当时紧张害怕的心情以及一种很不舒服的状态。

9. Mr. Houghton habitually was given tohigh-minded monologues about the good life, sexless and full of duty: be given to (doing sth.) 表示“倾向于,有…的癖好”。例如:Our teacher is given to punishing his students when they make mistakes。本句采用了反讽(irony)的手法。因为霍顿先生自诩清高,眼睛却盯着走过来的女子,将他的丑态真实的反应出来。

10. It will lecture on disinterested purity whileits neck is being remorselessly twisted toward a skirt:本句前后形成反差,校长一边讲清高,一边又不由自主的看着女孩子的裙子,将校长口是心非假清高描写得栩栩如生。并且用remorselessly一词来修饰,讽刺意味十足。the skirt使用了借代手法,指女人。

1.From each of them goes out its own voice, as inaudible as the streams of soundconveyed by electric waves beyond the range of our hearing, and just as thetouch of a button on our stereo will fill the room with music, so by openingone of these volumes, one can call into range a voice far distant in time andpace, and hear it speaking, mind to mind, heart to heart: 句子较长,由from…hearing 和just…heart两部分组成,前一部分是完全倒装句,后一部分是由justas…so…构成的复合句。此句中使用了拟人(personification)的修辞手法,用书籍来指代与读者处于不同时代、不同地点的伟大思想者;as inaudible as the streams of sound 用了明喻(simile)的修辞手法,说明书本中的智慧之声虽然是听不见的,但是它却实实在在存在于我们的周围。
