Fond of Flying

Section 1

You travel a great deal. Do you enjoy it?

Oh yes, I absolutely love traveling. I love going fromplace to place, and however much I travel I never get sick of it. I’m alwaysexcited, particularly when I get on a plane, because I very much like flying. Idon’t know why, because people nowadays say that it’s a very mundane way totravel, but I don’t find it so. I think flying is very exciting indeed. You geton the plane, there’s the noises at the airport, and I’m crazy about the wholething, when it …… the engines start, and it starts to go down the runway, andthere’s a great thrill as it goes down the runway—this is the only real thrillabout flying—the sense of speed as you go down a runway. AndI en- joy all that enormously.

Mind you, I don’t like everything about flying. I like itonce you’re in the aircraft but I don’t like sitting around airports, particularly if the plane’s delayed. I absolutely hate it then, because theairport’s crowded with people, nobody knows what’s happening, and I hate peoplenot telling me what’s happening—so I don’t know whether I’m going to wait foran hour, I don’t know whether I’m going to wait for about four hours.

Section 2

The trouble is that today many aircrafts have got so fastthat short flights are very short and you don’t really have time to even get adrink, or a meal, and all the things they do. So I much prefer going on longflights to short flights. Perhaps not too long, but long enough to enjoy it.When you get to really long flights, say 24 hours, I’m not so fond of those, because it’s very tiring and it’s difficult to get to sleep, and you get verydisorientated because of the difference in time and I don’t like that very muchat all. But there are things you can do to make a long flight easier to dealwith, and what I like to do is, if possible, it’s easier if you can flywherever you’re going when it’s mostly dark, because then there’s a fair chanceof getting to sleep. What I like to do for my ideal long-distance flight is tohave a long enough spell that you could go to sleep.

What I don’t like is the habit they have on long-distanceflights of constantly waking you up, because they think that you may be bored, when of course really all you want to do is sleep. And I’m not at all fond ofit—I hate it when they come along and say to me “Oh it’s timefor your meal now.” or it’s “Would you like another drink?”—Ijust can’t stand that because all I want to do is to go to sleep.
