应用TBS宫颈细胞学报告系统的目的是提供一套全球统一的细胞病理学报告系统。不同实验室使用一致的检查结果命名系统，并可以在不同实验室和不同国家之间进行比较。在过去十多年，细胞病理学技术取得了许多重大进展，例如：液基细胞学、自动化标本制备、计算机辅助筛查、HPV检测、细胞学结合HPV检测筛查等，宫颈癌筛查指南也做了很大修改。HPV疫苗于2006年开始投入使用并被发达国家女性逐渐接受，将来宫颈癌及其癌前病变的发生率很可能会进一步降低。TBS系统自1988年建立以来，已于1991年、2001年被修订两次，2014年又第三次修订，将来必定还会被重新评价和修订，以适应宫颈癌研究、治疗、预防和筛查新技术的进展。
