The above discussion is the main compatible method for purgative formulas. The elaborate discussion on the purgative medicinals in this chapter is due to the following reasons. On one hand, purgative medicinals with cold property are the main emphasis of the purgative formulas. It was noted by Basic Questions - Great Treatise on the Regular Principles of the Six Origins that:“ Attacking the interior syndrome should not be done without cold medicinals ” (攻里不远寒), therefore, dà huáng (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) is used in every formula for either cold purgation or warm purgation, even though the combination with other medicinals may be different. On the other hand, the combination of medicinals for promoting the flow of qi, for regulating the middle and nourishing the stomach, and medicinals for invigorating the blood and dispelling stasis in purgative formulas with warm property share a common point with that of cold purgative formulas, thus they will not be discussed in detail again.
