Apollinisch—dionysisch.—Es giebt zwei Zustände, in denen die Kunst selbst wie eine Naturgewalt im Menschen auftritt, über ihn verfügend, ob er will oder nicht: einmal als Zwang zur Vision,andrerseits als Zwang zum Orgiasmus. Beide Zustände sind auch im normalen Leben vorgespielt, nur schwächer: im Traum und im Rausch.
Aber derselbe Gegensatz besteht noch zwischen Traum und Rausch:beide entfesseln in uns künstlerische Gewalten, jede aber verschieden:der Traum die des Sehens, Verknüpfens, Dichtens; der Rausch die der Gebärde, der Leidenschaft, des Gesangs, des Tanzes.

Apollinian—Dionysian.—There are two conditions in which art appears in man like a force of nature and disposes of him whether he will or not: as the compulsion to have visions and as a compulsion to an orgiastic state. Both conditions are rehearsed in ordinary life, too, but weaker: in dream and in intoxication.
But the same antithesis obtains between dream and intoxication: both release artistic powers in us, but different ones: the dream those of vision,association, poetry; intoxication those of gesture, passion, song, dance.

阿波罗-狄奥尼索斯式的——艺术作为一种自然力量出现在人之中，它具有两种状态，不论人愿意与否，它都支配着人：一方面作为幻觉的强制力；另一方面则作为一种狂欢的强制力。这两种状态也同样表现在日常生活中，不过较为隐蔽：在醉与梦中。
在醉与梦之间依旧存在同样的对立，两者都释放我们内在的艺术力量，但仍不尽相同：梦释放观看、联想、虚构的力量；醉释放姿态、激情、歌唱、舞蹈的力量。
