Die Kunst erinnert uns an Zustände des animalischen vigor; sie ist einmal ein Überschuß und Ausströmen von blühender Leiblichkeit in die Welt der Bilder und Wünsche; andrerseits eine Anreizung der animalischen Funktionen durch Bilder und Wünsche des gesteigerten Lebens; – eine Erhöhung des Lebensgefühls, ein Stimulans desselben.
Inwiefern kann auch das Häßliche noch diese Gewalt haben?Insofern es noch von der siegreichen Energie des Künstlers Etwas mittheilt, der über dies Häßliche und Furchtbare Herr geworden ist;oder insofern es die Lust der Grausamkeit in uns leise anregt (unter Umständen selbst die Lust, uns wehe zu thun, die Selbstvergewaltigung:und damit das Gefühl der Macht über uns).

Art reminds us of states of animal vigor; it is on the one hand an excess and overflow of blooming physicality into the world of images and desires; on the other, an excitation of the animal functions through the images and desires of intensified life;-an enhancement of the feeling of life, a stimulant to it.
How can even ugliness possess this power? In so far as it still communicates something of the artist's victorious energy which has become master of this ugliness and awfulness; or in so far as it mildly excites in us the pleasure of cruelty (under certain conditions even a desire to harm ourselves, self-violation-and thus the feeling of power over ourselves).

艺术提醒着我们动物性活力的状态，它一方面是绽放的肉体性面向图像和欲望世界时的一种过剩和溢出；另一方面，它是一种通过强化生命的图像和欲望对动物性机能的激发——一种生命感的增强，它的一支兴奋剂。
丑如何也拥有这种力量？只要丑能够传达出艺术家所具有的主宰丑陋和恐怖的常胜能量，抑或只要它轻轻激起我们内心残暴的愉悦（在一些情况下，甚至一种伤害我们自身的欲望、自我暴力，以及因此凌驾于我们自身之上的强力感）。
