结论

1961年韦勒克发表《西方文学研究中的现实主义概念》时，大约并没有料见到有年轻学者会站出来质疑他的观点，也难以想象他们之间的讨论在某种程度上预示了现实主义概念此后经历的学海沉浮。近六十年之后重温这段小插曲时，我们或许可以在“后见之明”的加持下更加清晰地看到两位学者交锋的本质与意义。韦勒克与格林伍德的观念交锋根植于卢卡奇解读的伟大现实主义传统，深深嵌入他与布莱希特主导的现实主义/现代主义辩论的时代语境中。韦勒克对现实主义概念的梳理与分析无疑展现了这位精通欧洲多门语言的比较文学大师出众的博学与文采，然而他对现实主义概念的价值评判却不可避免地受到20世纪美国学术界“冷战反现实主义”（Cold War Antirealism）的影响，“从纽约批评家特里林、豪、列文，学院派美国文学研究者们如蔡斯、费德勒，新批评派，以及移居美国的法兰克福学派知识分子们如阿多诺，美国文人中许多人在20世纪中期倾向于贬抑社会现实主义，褒扬浪漫主义或现代主义”（Esty，“Realism Wars” 324），韦勒克当然也在其中，只是他的立场表现较为复杂——尤其在对卢卡奇现实主义理论的态度上：批判却不乏欣赏，深受影响而不自知。年轻的英国学者格林伍德初出茅庐，从黑格尔美学的认识论出发，将现实主义看作一种必须与再现现实的永恒追求挂钩的人类基本认知诉求，并不拘囿于某个历史时代或具体的文学规范；相关的文学创作根据不同时代作家们对现实生活的不同感知，而被打上时代的和个性化的印记，绝非对现实生活的机械复制、摹仿。因而就概念自身而言，他坚持“必须记住现实主义是一个流动的概念，随着时代世界观改变，需要合适的新定义”（94）。

同时，韦勒克与格林伍德的争论揭示了现实主义概念在认识论与美学层面的诉求以及二者之间的矛盾性。詹姆逊认为现实主义“是伪装成美学理念的认识论追求（知识或真实），最终给两个难以兼容的维度带来致命后果”（ Antinomies 5）。实际上，现实主义两种维度不同取向之间形成的张力反倒为现实主义概念自20世纪60年代以来的自我丰富与发展提供了源源不断的动力。自韦勒克以来的现实主义概念批评者们，往往把论点建立在对现实主义保守、封闭的假定基础上，把现实主义文学视为“天真的”认识论和语言观的产物、“欺骗性的”意识形态代理人。他们认为语言学转向之后，现实无法被语言反映，必须摒弃对应理论；不同的话语因而不能被某一个现实所衡量，语言不再因为指向独立于心灵的现实而具有指征功能，而是产生世界的差异系统。结构主义、解构主义、马克思主义的批评进路将现实主义研究引向了语言的本质与意识形态问题，提出的观点深刻、犀利，不乏偏激，但也在客观上刺激了研究者们为了打好现实主义保卫战和攻坚战，深入细致地重访19世纪现实主义文学，在一波波文艺思潮的洗礼下迎难而上，不断丰富、拓展现实主义的内涵与外延，推动其在20世纪持续的自我发现与更新，以致出现了前所未有的概念“家族”盛况：新现实主义、魔幻现实主义、实验现实主义、道德现实主义、自觉现实主义、地域现实主义、后现代现实主义、边缘现实主义、世界现实主义等，一如千树万树梨花开。

于是，站在21世纪当下反观韦勒克与格林伍德多年以前的观念交锋，人们惊奇地发现现实主义既是历史的——“现实主义文学的形式创新在一段历史时期内是有限度的”（王守仁 56），也寄托着发现未被记载或看见的现实生活的永恒认识论追求，既是镌刻着19世纪时代印记的一套流变中的规范，又在一波波文化思想浪潮推动与作家个体创造中不断突破既有规范、促进新生。二者不是非此即彼的单选项，而是同时成立的对立命题，其内含的矛盾张力吊诡地成为詹姆逊眼中“特别不稳定的概念”（“Existence of Italy” 158）历久弥新的源头。如今，作为世界文学体系中“充满审美可能的跨国媒介”（Goodlad 183），现实主义概念的未来或许早已在1961—1962年《新语言学》上刊登的一段学术争论中埋下了伏笔。
