1. Fully Booked

(Scene: A guest would like to reserve a single room for September 24th. But the rooms are fully booked on that day. The guest asks the clerk to recommend another hotel in the city center that are not full up.)

Clerk: Advance Reservations. Good morning. Can I help you?

Guest: Yes, I’d like to reserve a single room for September 24th.

Clerk: Just a moment, please. I’m sorry, miss. We are fully booked on that day.

Guest: Oh, that’s too bad.

Clerk: Is it possible for you to change your reservation date?

Guest: I’m afraid not.

Clerk: Would you like us to put you on our waiting list and call you in case we have a cancellation?

Guest: Thank you. That’s very kind of you. But could you recommend me another hotel which won’t be full up?

Clerk: Yes, of course. Where would you rather like to be, in the city center or in the suburb?

Guest: I prefer a place close to the city center because most of our clients’ offices are in the downtown business section.

Clerk: In that case, I would suggest that you try International Hotel.

Guest: Do you know the rate per night for a single there?

Clerk: Well, there is a minimum price for off-season stay and a maximun price for peak-season stay. A single with shower at the moment would run you between 380 yuan and 480 yuan.

Guest: I see. One last thing, do you know the telephone number?

Clerk: Yes. It’s 500—4305. Shall I call the hotel for you now?

Guest: No, thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. Goodbye.

Clerk: Goodbye, and thank you for calling us.

2. Canceling a Reservation

(Scene: A guest would like to cancel a reservation which is under White’s name. The reservation is from September 15th for 3 nights. The clerk helps the guest cancel the reservation.)

Clerk: Room Reservations. May I help you?

Guest: Yes. I’d like to cancel a reservation, because the travel schedule has been changed.

Clerk: That’s OK. Could you tell me under whose name was the reservation made?

Guest: White. W—H—I—T—E.

Clerk: And what was the date of the reservation?

Guest: From September 15th for 3 nights.

Clerk: Excuse me, but is the reservation for yourself or for another party?

Guest: It’s for my boss.

Clerk: Well, may I have your name and phone number, please?

Guest: Yes, it’s Ellen Green, and my number is 245—3971.

Clerk: Thank you. ma’am. I will cancel Mr White’s reservation for September 15th for 3 nights. My name is Wang Ying and we look forward to another chance to serve you.

Guest: It’s my pleasure.

3. Adjusting a Reservation(R: Reservationist, G: Guest)

(Scene: Mr. Dunning calling from Los Angles has reserved a suite on Oct. 2nd. He would extend his stay in the hotel for two nights. The reservationist helps the guest reserve the suite for two nights from Oct. 2nd to 4th).

R: Advance Reservations. Good afternoon. This is Mary Wang speaking. What can I do for you?

G: This is Mr. Dunning speaking. I’m calling from Los Angles. I have reserved a suite on Oct. 2nd.

R: Just a minute, sir, I will look through the reservation records. Yes, we do have a reservation for you on that day. Are you calling to confirm it, Mr. Dunning?

G: Not really. I’d like to make an adjustment of my reservation. I know that my business negotiations will last more days than I have planned. I’ll extend my stay in your hotel for two nights.

R: Would you please hold the line for a moment? I’ll take a look at the hotel’s booking record. Yes, sir. You can have the suite for two nights from Oct. 2nd to 4th.

G: That’s great. Thank you very much.

R: You’re welcome. We are expecting to see you soon.
