Have you ever seen (1)______(一个) chimpanzee in a zoo? If not, you'd better run and see one. Why? Because they're in danger. There may soon be none of them left.
Chimpanzees were once found in many African countries. But, a United Nations report said last week that they are disappearing from such countries fast.
In Senegal, for example, there are only (2)______(二百) left. There used to be a few (3)______(千). Chimpanzees are also in danger in other parts of the world.
Chimpanzees are a kind of great ape. There are three other kinds of great ape:gorillas, gibbons and orangutans. They are all in danger.
There are about (4)______(四十万) great apes in the world. “They all face extinction, some soon, others within (5)______(五十五) years,” says Klaus Toepfer, head of the UN Environment Programme.
“Over (6)______(百分之九十) of a great ape's DNA is like ours. If we lose them, we will destroy a part of ourselves,” says Klaus.
Why are chimpanzees in danger and how can we save them?
Great apes are in danger because of humans. We are killing them and destroying the forests where they live. According to the UN report, about (7)______(六千) chimpanzees die each year because of humans. Some people kill them for money. But most die after humans cut down the forests where they live. This means great apes have no place to live and no food to eat.
Last week, scientists from (8)______(五分之二) countries of the world met in Paris, France, and made a report telling countries how to protect apes.
