Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, became independent from Malaysia on 9th August, 1965. Then it has been a sovereign（主权），democratic and independent state. The nation of immigrants, including the local, Chinese, Malays, Indians, Europeans and Americans, has its multi-culture. So to promote racial harmony is the core policy of the government.
Singapore is not just one island but a main island with 63 surrounding islets（小岛）. The main island has a total land area of 682 square km. In just 150 years, Singapore has grown into a thriving centre of commerce and industry. Its former role as an entrepot（集散地）has diminished, as the Republic has increased its manufacturing（制造）base. It has also become one of the most important financial centres of Asia, with more than 130 banks.
The country of Singapore is also a city, which is known as the Garden City. The Singapore River flows across the city, whose banks are the first choice for immigrants. At the estuary of the river stands the “Merlion”（鱼尾狮）made of white stone, which is the most national personification of the Singapore. The famous attractions also include Gardens by the Bay（滨海湾花园），Bukit Timah Nature Reserve（武吉知马自然保护区），Clarke Quay（克拉码头），Geylang Serai（芽笼士乃港湾）and so on.
Singapore is also a paradise of food，owing to its multi-culture and rich history and the cuisines, including Bak kut Teh（肉骨茶），Nasi Lemak（椰浆饭），Laksa（叻沙），Chendol（珍多）and many other dishes, influenced by China, India, and other countries.
Business dealings are facilitated by Singapore's superb communications network which links the Republic to the rest of the world via satellite（卫星），24-hour telegraph and telephone systems. Singapore's strategic location, excellent facilities, fascinating cultural contrasts and tourist attractions contribute to its success as a leading destination for both business and pleasure.
