Vehicles provide much convenience for man.In ancient times, people in north rode horses to substitute for walking while people in south took boats. In modern life, bicycle has become popular all over the world. Our country has been known as the kingdom of bikes for a period. Gradually, with high scientific technology, different kinds of vehicles are invented by mankind. At the same time, people travel more frequently than ever before. Consequently, the world has become smaller and smaller.
Vehicles save people much time in travelling, and they are everywhere: ships sail on the sea, planes fly in the air, subways run under the ground, while trains travel on the railway. The most marvelous thing is that people can travel to the space by spacecraft. Nowadays, people rely increasingly on them. Each day, you can see people taking different ways to work. Some ride bikes, some take buses, while others ride motorcycles or their own personal cars. In a word, the vehicles play an important role in humans' life.
交通工具给人们带来了诸多方便。古代，北方人以马代步而南方人则是用船。到了现代，自行车风靡全球。我国曾一度成为自行车王国。逐渐地，人们运用高科技发明了各种各样的交通工具。与此同时，人们外出也更加频繁，世界变得越来越小。
交通工具为人们外出旅行节省了不少时间，它们无处不在： 船只在大海上行驶；飞机在天空中穿行；地铁在地下穿梭；火车在轨道上奔驰。更令人惊叹的是，人们可以乘坐宇宙飞船遨游太空。如今，人们越来越依赖它们。每天都可以看到人们乘坐不同的交通工具去上班，有的骑自行车，有的乘公交，也有的骑摩托车或开私家车。总之，交通工具在人们的生活中扮演着重要的角色。
乘坐交通工具的用法：
by + 交通工具，例如 by bike / bus / train / car / boat /plane 。注意此时工具前面不加冠词 the 且用名词单数。
take + the + 交通工具，注意此时依然用名词的单数形式。如 take the subway, take the bike。

2. substitute [ˈsʌbstitju:t] n. 代用品、代替者； v. 代替，替代(for)
3. consequently [ˈkɔnsikwəntli] adv. 所以、因此

5. spacecraft [ˈspeiskrɑ:ft] n. 航天器、宇宙飞船
6. play an important role in 在……扮演重要角色

8 You'd better pay by credit card when you rent a car, or you will pay a higher deposit for it. 租车时最好用信用卡，否则得付很高的押金。
9 You have enough time to transfer for the train is leaving 30 minutes later.
你有足够的时间转车，因为火车在30分钟后出发。
10 Smoking is not allowed in the train. 火车上不允许吸烟。
