There is merit to both sides of this argument. Many people see society as far more interconnected and dependent than it was in times past, while others see the many opportunities that modern living has brought for independence. Personally, I feel that modern society has left us much more independent compared to in the past.
There are two main reasons why it could be argued that we are more dependent on each other now. First, life has become far more complex and difficult for young adults, as the cost of living has become exponentially greater than it was for generations past . For example, these days, most young people rely on the savings of their parents to enter the property market. It is nearly impossible for a young person to afford the mortgage on a new house without help from family. Secondly, society in general seems to be more ambitious and driven to strive upward . In many cases, this means that most parents must both work full-time to advance in their careers and ensure success for their children , and so they must depend on grandparents, babysitters, or daycare for their help.
As valid as I feel these points are, I agree more so with the people who say that modern life has made us more independent. In most countries, the trend is for families to disperse and move away from each other for career or educational opportunities. This means that today's people cannot depend on their family for emotional support, guidance or childcare in the same way they could if they lived geographically together . We can also travel and see more of the world in today's society. Many students now choose to travel overseas for study or for employment, taking them not just away from their family, but making them adjust to completely new cultures and thought processes. Many people may even work for a foreign company from the comfort of their own home thanks to the ubiquitousness of the Internet and the rise of the home office .
To conclude, while there are some good reasons to believe that modern society has made us more dependent on others, personally, I believe that the rise of migration and the home office in general have made us more independent overall.
