The Story of Puma

Paragraph 1

In 1948, Rudolf Dassler left the company cofounded with his brother, and then set up his own shoe company, Puma, while his brother started Adidas. After considerable success with its products on the football pitch and athletics track, Puma became a limited partnership.

Paragraph 2

The company enjoyed further publicity at the Olympic Games and World Cups, with players such as the famous Brazilian footballer Pelé wearing Puma shoes. In the 1970s, it had success with its tennis shoes too. By 1981, many American football stars were wearing Puma shoes. Later, the tennis stars Martina Navratilova and Boris Becker won the Wimbledon Tournament wearing Puma shoes.

Paragraph 3

In 1986, Puma became a corporation and went public on the Munich and Frankfurt stock exchanges. At that time, Puma introduced many innovations in shoe design such as the “Trinomic” and “disc system” shoes. Jochen Zeitz was appointed CEO in 1993 and a year later Puma made a profit for the first time since going public. After more athletic success, Puma established Puma North America as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Paragraph 4

In 1998 Puma linked sport and fashion when it launched a collection with the fashion designer Jil Sander. It also placed products in top Hollywood movies, as well as launching clothing and footwear for travellers to wear on business trips. Puma products became very popular.

Paragraph 5

One of the critical failures for Puma was that Rudolf had an argument with the coach of the German football team, and that allowed Adidas an opening before the 1954 World Cup, where West Germany won against Hungary. The entire West German team was wearing black striped Adidas boots. From that moment on, Adidas received letters from people around the world wanting to sell their products in other countries. As good as the Puma boots were, it would take many years to build up its international business.

Text A

Email is a basic method of communication in the workplace and an important part of our lives. Pew Internet research suggests that about 62% of all employed Americans have Internet access and 98% of those use email on the job. In total, 57 million employees use email for work. 78% of workers who use email send ten or fewer messages on the average day and 11% send more than 20. Unfortunately, a lot of these emails are not written in a well-mannered way. They don't use spell check, aren't action-oriented and aren't specific enough. However, emails can leave a bad impression if they are not written in the right way. Email manners are especially important today when so many employees are working remotely and face-time has been replaced by email-time. Your emails can have a great influence on the success of your career.

Text B

Email has become so popular that understanding good email manners is extremely important in the business environment. Here are some rules of business email manners to start with.

√ Be clear and concise. Stick to the subject and use as few words as possible.

√ Use a good subject line. The subject line should clearly reflect the contents of the email.

√ Send timely replies. If you do need time before replying, tell the sender when they can expect a reply.

√ Separate business and personal email accounts. Never use your business email for personal purposes.

√ Think about other ways of communication. There are times when a telephone call or a brief office visit can be a better way to deliver a message.

√ Avoid large-size attachments. If you must send a large file, contact the receiver first and ask how they would like to receive the file.

Text C

Task 3

Read the two texts below about two stadiums. Complete the form with key information from the texts. Use the EXACT words, phrases or numbers from the texts.

Text A

Hong Kong Stadium is the main sports venue of Hong Kong. Redeveloped from the old Government Stadium, it reopened as Hong Kong Stadium in March 1994. It has a maximum seating capacity of 40,000, including 18,260 at the main level, 3,173 at the executive level, 18,510 upper level seats and 57 seats for wheelchair users. The stadium is located in So Kon Po, Hong Kong Island. Most international football matches held in Hong Kong take place at this stadium. The stadium was supposed to be a multi-purpose entertainment and sports venue, due to its much greater capacity, compared to the popular and over-used Hong Kong Coliseum. However, its open-air nature has led to noise complaints from residents in tower blocks surrounding the stadium. It has not been allowed to host entertainment events since 1999.

Text B

London Stadium is a stadium in Stratford, London, England, at Marshgate Lane in the Lower Lea Valley. It was constructed to serve as the home stadium for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Land preparation for the stadium began in mid-2007, with the official construction start date on 22 May 2008, although piling works for the foundation began four weeks before. Holding 80,000 for the Olympics and the Paralympics, the stadium was afterward used intermittently whilst being rebuilt, re-opening in July 2016 with a capacity of 60,000. The decision to make West Ham United the main tenants was not welcomed by all, with the initial tenancy process having to be rerun. As well as its regular tenants, the stadium will continue to be used for a series of special events. The stadium hosted several 2015 Rugby World Cup matches, the 2017 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships. The stadium can also hold concerts.
