Lesson 16
Numbers(数字)

一、Conversation

A: What’s the area of your country?

B: It’s not very big. It’s a little over half a million square kilometers.

A: That sounds quite big! How many people live there?

B: There are about 30 million people in my country. Most of them live in the north.

A: What’s the average income?

B: That’s really hard to say. I think most people earn about two thousand dollars a month, if you convert the money from our currency into dollars.

A: So your country is fairly rich.

B: I think we are richer than most countries, but not as rich as countries in western Europe. Our biggest problem at the moment is unemployment, which is roughly 8%. It has doubled over the last four years.

A: Unemployment in my country is a fraction of that.

二、Numbers

1.Cardinal numbers ( 基数词 )

The numbers you use for counting are called “cardinal numbers”,for example:

(4 )百位数个数基数词形式加“ hundred ”,表示几百,在几十几与百位间加上 and.

101:a hundred and one;320:three hundred and twenty;648:six hundred and forty-eight.

Reading

Maria was learning to add numbers. She liked to add numbers. It was easy to add numbers. She could add one and one. She knew that one and one are two. She knew that two and two are four. She knew that three and three are six. But that was it. She didn’t know what four and four are. She asked her mom. Her mom told her that four and four are eight. “Oh, now I know,” Maria said. “I am four years old now. In four more years, I will be eight.” Maria was a fast learner. She wasn’t a slow learner. n2JkqeChJxOfjBe1emB6iyemU1nIHZFblAr3YjlMv+uJ+DESOIiTB7Y5ZWDGPuu5
