关系词分为关系代词和关系副词。常用的关系代词有who/whom （指代的先行词表示人）, which （指代的先行词表示物）, that/whose （指代的先行词表示人或物）。其他的关系代词还有as （见2.8节）, than （见2.9节）, but （见2.10节）以及what （见2.11节）。这些特殊的关系代词的用法我们在下文都会详细讨论。关系代词在定语从句中可充当主语、宾语或表语等句子成分。

关系副词有when （表示时间），where （表示地点）和why （表示原因），它们在定语从句中一般只充当状语。

最常用的关系代词主要是which, that, who和whom，这些都是读者很熟悉的，在此不再赘述。下面仅举几例予以说明：
