Babar, the young King of the elephants, and his wife, Queen Celeste, have just left for their wedding trip in a balloon.
年轻的大象国王巴巴和他的妻子，王后西莱斯特，乘坐着气球，准备去度蜜月了。
“Good-by! See you soon!” cry the elephants as they watch the balloon rise and drift away.
“拜拜！愿你们早些归来！”大象们朝他们喊着，就这样看着气球越升越高，渐渐远离他们的视线。
Arthur, Babar’s little cousin, still waves his beret. Old Cornelius,who is chief over all the elephants when the King is away,anxiously sighs: “I do hope they won’t have any accidents!”
巴巴的表弟，亚瑟朝着远方挥舞着他的小帽子，不肯离去。在国王外出的日子里，老科莱斯负责打理一切事务，治理大象王国，他担心地说：“希望他们能一切顺利。”
The country of the elephants is now far away. The balloon glides noiselessly in the sky. Babar and Celeste admire the landscape below. What a beautiful journey! The air is balmy, the wind is gentle.There is the ocean, the big blue ocean.
气球静静地在天空中飘着，离大象王国越来越远了。巴巴和西莱斯特惊叹于景色的壮观，多么美妙的一次旅行啊！空气清新，微风和煦，还能看见蔚蓝的、广阔的大海。
The country of the elephants is now far away. The balloon glides noiselessly in the sky. Babar and Celeste admire the landscape below. What a beautiful journey! The air is balmy, the wind is gentle.There is the ocean, the big blue ocean.
气球被风吹到了大海上空，突然一阵猛烈的暴风雨袭来。巴巴和西莱斯特很害怕，两人一边不停颤抖着，一边紧紧抓住气球下方的筐。
By extraordinary good fortune, just as the balloon is about to fall into the sea, a final puff of wind blows it on an island where it flattens out and collapses.
幸运的是，就在巴巴和西莱斯特快要掉进海里的瞬间，突然吹来一阵风，将他们吹到了一个小岛上。气球掉落在地，气都漏掉了，筐也坏了。
“You aren’t hurt, Celeste, are you?” Babar inquires anxiously. “No! Well then look, we are saved!”
“西莱斯特，你还好吧？”巴巴焦急地问道。西莱斯特说：“我没事！啊！我们得救了！”
Leaving the wrecked balloon on the beach,Babar and Celeste pick up their belongings and go off to seek shelter.
巴巴和西莱斯特将破损的热气球留在海滩上，拿起自己的东西，离开了海滩，去寻找可以遮风挡雨的地方。
他们找到一块空地，把湿衣服脱了下来。西莱斯特负责将衣服挂起来晾干，巴巴则捡来木柴，升起了火，打算做早餐。
Babar and Celeste settle themselves comfortably. They have set up their tent and, sitting on some large stones, they eat with relish an excellent rice broth well-sweetened and cooked to perfection. “We are not so badly off on this island,” says Babar.
巴巴和西莱斯特不久就全部收拾妥当了。他们支起帐篷，一同坐在大石头上，开始吃用大米和肉汤精心调制出来的美味。巴巴说：“虽然我们不幸地被吹落到这座孤岛上，现在看来也不算太糟。”
After breakfast, while Babar explores the surrounding country, Celeste, left alone, falls sound asleep.
早饭过后，巴巴去四周巡视、查探情况，西莱斯特没有跟去，而是独自留在原地睡起觉来。
Just then, the inhabitants of the island, fierce and savage cannibals, suddenly discover her.
就在此时，小岛上的原住民，凶猛而野蛮的野人突然发现了熟睡中的西莱斯特。
“What kind of strange beast is this?” they say to one another.” We have never seen anything like it. Its meat must be very tender. Let’s creep up quietly and catch it while it sleeps.”
“这是一种什么奇怪的野兽？”他们你看看我，我看看你，互相询问起来。“从来都没见过这样的野兽，想必它的肉一定很鲜嫩、美味。趁它还没醒来，我们悄悄爬过去抓住它吧！”
The cannibals have succeeded in tying up Celeste with the clothesline on which the clothes were drying. Some dance with joy, while others have great fun trying on the stolen garments.Celeste sighs sadly, she thinks soon she will be eaten. She does not yet see Babar, who returns just in time to save her!
野人们把西莱斯特用来晾晒衣服的绳子拆下，将她五花大绑起来。野人们开心极了，有的高兴地跳起了舞，有的将偷来的衣服穿在身上，个个都玩得很开心。西莱斯特伤心地叹了口气，觉得自己大概等不到巴巴回来了，马上就会被野人们吃掉了。巴巴及时回来拯救她了。
In the twinkling of an eye, Babar has unbound Celeste.They both hurl themselves on the cannibals. Some are wounded,others take f light; all are terrified.
刹那间，巴巴就帮西莱斯特解开了身上的绳子。他们用身体全力撞向野人们。野人们有的被撞伤了，有的慌忙逃掉了，都感到十分恐惧。
Only a few courageous ones still resist. But they are thinking: “These big animals are certainly terribly strong and their hides are mighty tough!”
只有少数几个有胆量的野人还在顽强抵抗。他们内心却忐忑不安地想着：“这种体型巨大的动物，它们的身体一定很强壮，皮也一定非常坚硬。”
After having chased off the savages, Babar and Celeste rest themselves on the seashore. Suddenly, right in front of them a whale comes to the surface and spouts. Babar gets up immediately and says: “Good morning, Mrs. Whale, I am Babar, King of the elephants, and here is my wife Celeste. We have had a balloon accident and have fallen here on this island.Could you help us to get away?”
巴巴和西莱斯特赶走了野人，在海滩上躺着休息。突然，他们面前的海洋中有一头鲸鱼浮了出来，还喷着水。巴巴立即站了起来，对鲸鱼说道：“早上好，鲸鱼夫人，我叫巴巴，是大象王国的国王，旁边是我的夫人西莱斯特。我们乘坐的气球在遭遇暴风雨后便故障了，掉落在了这个小岛上。您可以帮我们离开这里吗？”
“I am delighted to make your acquaintance,” answers the whale, “and I will be very happy if I can be of service to you. I am just leaving to visit my family in the Arctic Ocean. I will drop you wherever you like. Quick, get on my back and hold tight so you don’t slip off. Are you ready? Get set. Let’s go!”
鲸鱼说：“我很开心能认识你们，也很高兴能为你们做些事情。我正打算去北冰洋探望亲人。我可以把你们送到你们想去的地方。快骑到我的背上来，要时刻抓紧我，别掉下去了。准备好了吗？坐稳了，我们要出发了！”
A few days later, a little weary, they are resting on a reef.Just then a school of little fish swims by.
赶了几天的路，他们都稍微有些疲倦了，便停下来坐在一个礁石上休息。就在这时，一群小鱼从他们旁边游过。
“I am going to eat up some of these,” says the whale. “I’ll be back in a minute.” And she dives down after them.
“我需要去吃些小鱼了，一会儿就回来。”鲸鱼说着便潜进了海里，去捕食小鱼了。
The whale has not come back! While eating the little fish, she completely forgot her new friends. She is a giddy,thoughtless creature.
然而，鲸鱼压根儿没有再回来！她捕食完小鱼后，就把亚瑟和西莱斯特给完全抛到一边了，根本不记得他们还在等她回去。她总是这样迷糊、大意。
“We were better off on the cannibal island. What will become of us now?” weeps poor Celeste. Babar does his best to comfort her.
“我们还不如留在小岛上呢！不知道我们还会遇见什么样的事？”可怜的西莱斯特伤心地哭了起来，巴巴则用心地安慰她。
After hours and hours spent on their little reef, without even a drop of fresh water, they finally spy a ship passing quite near them. She is a big steamer with three funnels. Babar and Celeste call out and yell as loudly as they can, but no one hears them. They try signaling with their trunks and with their arms.Oh, will they attract someone’s attention?
就这样好几个小时过去了，他们坐在暗礁上，周围没有一滴淡水。但天无绝人之路，他们终于看到了一艘船，就在离他们不远的地方缓缓驶过。这是一艘汽船，它非常巨大并带有三个烟囱。巴巴和西莱斯特用力地大声呼喊，但是没有人听到他们的呼救声。于是，他们又尝试用鼻子和胳膊发出信号。唉，不知船上的人能否看见他们？
