这个俚语的字面意思是“绑在脖子上的信天翁”。此句源于萨缪尔·泰勒·柯立芝（Samuel Taylor Coleridge）的诗作《老水手之歌》（The Rime of the Ancient Mariner），这首诗创作于1798年，描述了一名船员射杀了一只飞过的信天翁，从此以后，整条船都遭遇了一系列离奇的事件，其他船员觉得肯定是射杀信天翁的船员带来的厄运，于是将信天翁的尸体缠在他的脖子上以驱除厄运。
