二、序数词

1. 序数词的表示法

序数词（ ordinal numbers ）是表示数目顺序的词。与上一部分的基数词相对应的序数词是：

（1）几个特殊拼法的序数词为： first （第一）， second （第二）， third （第三）， fifth （第五）， eighth （第八）， ninth （第九）， twelfth （第十二）， twentieth （第二十）

（ 2 ）以 one, two, three, five, eight, nine 收尾的多位数词，照上述方法变序数词： twenty-first （第二十一）， thirty-second （第三十二） sixty fifth （第六十五）， eighty-ninth （第八十九） a hundred and fifty-second （第一百五十二）

（ 3 ）其他情况都在基数词上加 -th 构成： thirty-sixth （第三十六）， ninety-seventh （第九十七）， two hundred and thirty-sixth （第二百三十六）， first, second 等词常缩写为 1st ， 2nd ， 3rd ， 20th ， 21st 等。

2. 序数词在句子中的作用

（1）序数词在句子中主要用作：

①定语（前面都加定冠词）：

The firs three runners won medals. 头三名赛跑的人获得奖牌。

She received a video camera for her fourteenth birthday.她14岁生日时收到一台摄像机。

②表语：

She was second in line （in her class）. 她排第二（在班上是第二名）。

③主语：

The firs （one） was no good; the second was better. 第一个不行，第二个好一点。

④宾语或介词宾语：

The third child tried to outdo the firs and second . 第三个孩子设法表现得比第一、第二两个孩子好。

I was among the firs to arrive. 我是第一批到的。

（ 2 ）序数词的一些其他用法：

①和 a 连用，表示“再一个”“又一次”等：

We’ll have to do it a second time. 我们得再做一次。

When he sat down, a fourth man rose to speak. 他坐下后，第四个人站起来发言。

②表示日期：

June 23rd 6月23日 October 1st 10月1日

③构成许多短语：

first place 第一名 first-rate 头等的 second nature 第二天性

second-rate 第二流的 second thought（s）再次考虑 second to none 不比任何人差

（ 3 ）用基数词表示顺序的办法：

在很多情况下，我们可以用基数词代替序数词表示顺序，例如： the fourth chapter → Chapter Four （第四章）
