In western culture, gods share the same personality with human beings.As a result, human figure has dominated the western sculpture in a span of 2500 years since ancient Greece. Such kind of feature is also closely associated with the ancient Greek philosophy which regarded human beings as the measure of all things. In addition, western human figure sculptures were made to cater to the appreciation of the public, as evidence by the fact that they were often placed in public places such as plazas and avenues.
在西方文化中，神祗与人同形同性，自上而下为“神系”，因此其雕塑以人体、人像为主题。从古希腊创立并奠定了以人为主题的雕塑形式后，一直到现代雕塑兴起的2500年中，人像始终占据着雕塑题材的主导地位，涌现出众多优秀的人像雕塑作品，这与古希腊“人，乃万物之尺度”的观念有着文化上的必然联系。此外西方将大量的人像雕塑放置于广场和街道，也显示出雕塑艺术功能的公共性特征。
